Japanese Christian Symbolism in Kanji

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Rainbow Despair, Oct 12, 2002.

  1. Everyone knows that Kanji characters aren't just random combinations of strokes; most characters are constructed in a very logical manner. In fact some characters even tell stories. Take for example this relatively well known example, the Kanji for fune (boat). The left side is the boat radical (makes sense!) and on the right are the characters for 8 and mouth. In some instances, the character for mouth can be used to represent a quantity of people. So looking at the different parts, you get 8 people riding on a boat. Now how many people rode on Noah's ark? That's right. 8 - Noah, his wife, his 3 sons, and their wives.

    Pretty neat, huh? :)

    Hey neat ^_^!

Kanji's are actually Chinese words, and since I'm Chinese, I learn something about them too!
