    Alright, rather random post, but... XD

    For anyone living in the eastern US, this summer is going to be the mating time for cicadas in that area. Cicadas have a mass emergence only once every seventeen years, so this may be a first experience for some of you.

    Cicadas are inch-and-a-half-long bugs that spend their larval stage inside trees. They take about 17 years to mature, and then emerge to breed throughout the summer. Incidentally, cicadas are what make the loud buzzing sound sometimes heard in the background in anime. :3

    Also, keep an eye on your pets. They can get sick from eating cicadas, because the hard shells aren't very digestible.

    Hey, I live in Connecticut! This applies to me!

    But that's cool, I didn't know about the 17 year thing. I've heard/seen a few before, but that was mostly when I was in New York....

    Actually, there are two 17-year cycles, cycle A and cycle B. Cycle A, the larger of the two, occurs this year. This same mass-emergence cycle, the last time it occurred, was one of the single largest mass-emergences of cicadas in history. Cycle B occurred about six years ago, if I remember correctly.

    Quite a sight to see, and I get to return to Cincinnati just in time. -_-;

    If you live in like, the east of the US(oh, real descriptive) it does apply. I know it'll apply to me. Not sure whether that's good or bad.

    Ah, thanks for the correction. ^^; Since I live on the west coast, I've never actually seen the cicada mating emergence, and so I forgot the lesser cycle.

    Again this applies to me but if the last mating was the largest this could be even larger. My science teacher will be really interested in this.

    O I live in New Jersey.
