i was just wondering how any of yall like classic cars and whats your favorite? oh btw by classic i mean 1930-1975

my all time favorite calssic car is the 1969 Twincam 4.2 Litre 6 cylindar Jaguar XKE. gorgueous car. im hoping to be the proud owner of one soon. Emerald Green...oooo... anyway, didnt quite like the 63-68's but the 69 was my favorite body code. after that they started to look poor again too. but ill always love the look of the body. long swept nose and a squat back end. the Engine combines the perfect amount of torque with the perfect amount of horsepower and pulls like heck right off the line. handling is great, this particular year was the a perfect combination of Modern and Vintage cars. in terms of moderness *is that a word?* it has Disk brakes, fine handling capabilities, independent rear suspension, and the 4.2 litre twincam 6, but it also has that look of the vintage race cars from the earlier years. overall its a rather expensive car to own, id say for a fully restored one youll be droping round 30-45 grand depending on condition and model. for one thats not perfect but drivable with a few touch ups here and there id say youd drop bout 15-20 and for a complete fix up youll be droping maybe 10 grand. as for insurance...oooooooooooohhhh boy...im not going to even get into that...

    Shelby Cobra.
GT40 (which consequently gave Ferrari its uber-fame, and its own demise...)
    Ferrari Dino 308 GT4
    Porsche 911 Turbo

Basically, all the stuff you see in the LA Auto Show Classic section. I'd love the Shelby though. Damn.

Then own a Dodge Viper right next to it. =D

Anything made by Volkswagen during that era. :anime: ...what?

Okay, if you want specifics, model is about as specific as I get with cars, so I'm gonna say the Schwimmwagen, the Type 1, 2, and 134 (I think that's what the type number is... the Beetle, the Bus, and the Thing), and the Hebmueller. :D

    ...WHAT!?

Carroll Shelby is a genius. always was. his remake of the Ford Mustangs was incredible. *have you ever heard someone reving a GT-350?* The Shelby AC Cobra was a decent car, although i would have to say kinda structurally weak. he recently remade his Cobra. i dont like it, quite frankly. i think it looks kinda stupid. i think it took away from that old Cobra look.

The GT40 was an awesome car. amazing for its time is won i think three times at LeMans. i think the remake of it is also quite a car. the 2005 Ford GT is a supercharged DOHC 5.4 litre V-8. 500 BHP at 6000 RPM with 500 lb-ft at 4500 RPM. it does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds *thats faster than the Ferrari 360 Modena* Braking for 60-0 in 117 ft. about 139,000 US dollars.

im not too much a fan of the Dodge Viper. its a V-10 with way too much power as most american cars do. they go straight well but have trouble turning at high speeds.

Actually, Viper's have a lot of HP, yes. But, they can be steered very well in a combination of throttle and steering. I mean, seriously, there's other ways of using that V-10 for other than a straight line. Although, I *am* rather skeptical about the wheels they use in stock Vipers. For such a huge torque number (which is what really entices me over the horsepower figure) they use pretty average tires.

And, yes, stick with the old Shelby Cobras. Structurally weak, but if you're in one of those, don't plan on racing. Plan on looking GOOD.

A lot of things can be faster than a Modena. But, not very many look as GOOD as one. However, the GT40's main downfall is that it's horrible to get out of. Also, it was one of the very first race-ready Mid-Engine Rear Drive cars. =)

My uncle has this ultra-awesome Buick. I'm not sure the year, but it's somewhere in the span of the 30's or 40's. It looks like one of those cars from the old Mafia movies of that era.
The inside is fully-restored and upgraded. It has a new engine, new upholstery, a radio, CD player, heater, and all that, so the only really "classic" part is the outside. Of course, I've been saying for years that some auto manufacturer should do that ... make a new car that looks like an old one.
Of course, as it is, just keeping the outside together is no small task. One time he went nuts because he had a tiny scratch on his fender and it cost around 10k US to replace it.

My maths teacher owns an 80's royal family rolls royce which he claims Princess Diana has been it's passenger... I know him, I'm sure he's telling the truth. He is however currently trying to sell it on ebay for around £80,000 if I remember correctly... so I think you'll find it there if you type in 'classic cars' in the searching field.

well i guess that the point and shoot method of driving is somewhat effective but ive always been a fan of just good ole steering.

the AC Cobra really actualy was meant more or less as a race car tho. but it was bulit light so it could move faster, which accounts for the structual weakness.

if i remember correctly the GT-40 had the engine placed directly over the rear axle. and it was the new GT that has a mid mount engine. im not sure tho...as for the old ones...yeah they seemed like they'd be a *itch to get out or into. the new ones have fixed that problem tho. doors are a bit weird as they include a portion of the roof as well. cant drive it in the rain i suppose.

car upkeep is a pain in the butt. ho boy.....expecially on antiques...ive seen guys break down over a scratch before. i know one thing tho...my E-type isnt being driven during the winter, im always gonna keep my eyes on it, no one else is ever going to drive it. *laughs, wow im gonna never let this car outta my sight* honestly i think that sometimes...you really dont enjoy a car until you put a scratch in it cause your so damn worried about it.

ah yes, the Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. only 1400 were made of it. and i think it was only produced in 1955. to own one your probably going to drop about $750,000-$800,000 for one. gorgeuous car tho.

Not really. A Viper is only meant to be on the racetrack if its modified to do so. Other than that, it's heavy (for its aformentioned V-10) and cumbersome. Sure, handling is "superb", but on a track, an Austin Mini Cooper S has the weight and balance advantage.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Viper, but horsepower to weight ratio aside, the Cooper can keep up if the track has enough turns. It's more of a speed car, than a track car. If you want track car, go for the McLaren F1, or the Ferarri F40. Or even an Opel Astra X-Treme. Heck, a Lancer-Evolution would probably do better.

Like a Lotus Elise 190 (Izzy's Dream car) vs. a Ferarri F40. By all rights and on paper, the Ferrari should win, being one of the fastest cars on the planet. And its suspension was shared with Ferrari's F1 program. But an Elise can keep up with one with a "platry" 190 horsepower just by being more lightweight and easier to take corners in. An F40 is distinctly pretty light, but in the clip of the race, the Ferrari would swing wide on high corners due to its greater weight. The Lotus would just stick to the inside and catch up on each corner. The result is that you see the Lotus catch the Ferrari in the turns, but the Ferrari would toast the Lotus on the straights. However, the track didn't have really long straights, so they kept pretty even.

Lotus has made good cars from the beggining...they always seem to look decent but are unfortunetly rare here in the US. until just recently you had to have one privately imported from Europe. yall ever see the Lotus Europa? interesting looking car

Yeah, true, Gensai. They're rare as all hell here in the U.S. The only downside to the Elise is the fact that they use Rover K-Engines. Those things BLOW, which is why the race with the F40 astounded me. The U.S. models will be using the Celica GT engine, so performance and fuel economy actually steps up a notch. However, what really got me was Sun International's Lotus Elise Type-R. The Elise 111 with the B18C5 engine (98 Integra Type-R). Which is what I'm planning to get...sometime. Only turbocharged, while it's at it.

In Metallic Burnt Orange. In the 190 body. Lotus Racing Coilovers. Spoon Pistons, Frog cams, AR seals and piston rings for an engine good to nearly 10k RPMs. With some 17" Volk TE-37's in bronze. With 255/Z-rated S-02's. Not that I have it all planned out, or anything.

However, if you *really* want a track car...

The 340R. Nothing but plastics and tubeframe with an engine directly mounted to your back-end rollbars. ^_^

And the Europa, for those uninitiated to the lovelies of Lotus:

And the Lotus Exige, the *real* track car:

And Lotus' other model, the Esprit, the high-end car:

Not classic cars as stated in the *thread*, but damn, they all look BOOTY-FUL!!!
