Hey, sorry if this sounds like advertising. I only have 1000 words so I'll make this fast and cut out the sorry's for a bit of advertising.

I'm holding a contest were you draw your own character and can win $100.00 (Cndn), $50.00 (U.S.), and have your character be made into a main character in upcoming manga.

    Rules:
All entries must original and not plagairized
All entries must be on 8.5 x 11 in. paper and MAILED in legal sized evelopes
    All rules must be followed
All characters should be drawn in either a front view, side view, or angle view.

All artists retain the right to their character, although Creative Publishing (c) 2003 is enitled to use the character legally as is seen fit.
Sorry entries cannot be returned. For all rules and entries email me at

It's not seling the rights, it's just creating a new character, one for fun... putting some effort into it, then if your lucky...winning.

I would'nt sell the rights of my character designs...as a matter of fact, I'm very secretive of them, why would I expect anyone else to do the same.

i rest my case. creative publishing will probably get a heap of entries, which automatically become legally their property. Thus they could claim no one won, pay nobody, and use any or all the entries because they legal own them. 'creative' publishing is probably a good name for them.

i hope to god no one is fool enough to enter something like this. because i know YOU aren't, newmanga.

Ok, then how about this as a official rule.

WINNING entry becomes sole property of Creative Publishing (c) 2003
(I'll edit my first post later)

I have to do this, otherwise someone could claim that I did not claim the rights to their character and sue me. So, by stating that the winning entry becomes my sole property, they can't sue me...and they get a neat $50.00 to spend.
Buuuuutttttt I bet you already knew that.

Oh, yeah. If nobody enters by June. This contest will be in the ??? section of my manga mag. (I haven't thought of a name for the section yet). I'll tell everyone more about when it's released with a few free scans. Now, wasn't that nice of me. $50.00 for drawing, and a few free scans. WOW!

I bet there must be more rules to this... What kind of character are you looking for? A humanoid, robot, animal, demon, etc.? Do you want the entry to be a fully detailed drawing, or a rough sketch? One pose, or several so that whoever incorporates the character into the manga will be accurate? And does it have to be a certain type of manga? (romance, mech, kiddie, horror) Cuz that'll give people an idea of what kind of character to make. And how many mangas will be made? Just one? Is the manga gonna be published in regular installments in your magazine, or will it be a graphic novel or what? People want to know how their created character will be treated when given to another artist to work with. And since a lot of people here are from the USA, will you be able to give the prize money in an equivalent amount of US dollars? Is the deadline June? (It's almost July already!) And those free scans you are talking about...you mean scans of your magazine, or the character as shown in the manga, or scans of other people's entries? What is Creative Publishing known for? (has it published anything we've seen in stores or is it a brand new, independent company?) Sorry to have so many questions, but it's good to give all the details out here in the forum (as opposed to offering your email for people to find out the rest of the rules) to get people more interested, especially since you're starting to encounter a lil negative confrontation.

And it does sound like you want to have all the rights to the winning character (even if just to avoid legal action). In most well-planned contests, the original creators KEEP the rights to their creation. That's how it is anyway with stories, poems, pictures, etc. Sure you can say that the winning entry will become the property of Creative Publishing (that let's you use it in your manga), but the character's artist should keep the rights (which means he/she can still do whatever he/she wants with the character, whether using it in their own manga or giving it to another company to use). "You keep the rights to your work" are magical words to any artist's ears.

Wow, great post. I kinda like answering questions. Anyway sorry for not being specific enough, it's my first contest so I'm trying to do my best.

    Now, heres the answers.

Creative Publishing is an independently owned company that is currently creating a manga magazine (like Shonen Jump). This features all new and unknown authors and artist who are very talented and creative. The release date for the new magazine is set for mid July or early August 2003. (sorry for the shameless advertising).

The Prize has been move up to $100.00 CDN ($50.00 U.S.) I wasn't sure about spending that much but I figure that I can. Winners will recieve notice of when to expect their money.

The character may be anything the artist wishes. The character will be a regular character in my manga, which is a long running many saga manga.

The drawing should be either Front, side or angle. (or all three) although I can figure the other angles out for myself.

The manga is aimed at teens (13+) wild mild violence, mild swearing, and brief nudity.

The scans I said I'd show will be from my first manga (not the one the winning character will be in) and from the other mangas in the magazine. Although these will be just teasers and not the full story.

The artists will retain the full rights to their character, but I will be entitled to use the character as I see fit for legal reasons.
    Thanks, and Adios

Not to sound rude, or put you down, but I have a few questions:

    1. So this is basically an american version/attempt of shonen jump?

    2. Are you part of this company, or are you going to send in your manga and be an artist?

    3. Are they looking for new American artists, or just predefined and little known artists?

Hey, no problem, you don't don't sound rude.

Actually, it's more of a Canadian attempt at Shonen Jump, but it'll be sold in America, Canada, U.K., and Belgium. Also were going to have fan art and other fan submited things. I'd also like to add lot's of new things...but I don't really want to go into that right now.

I am president of the company but also a contributing artist/author.

Any artists and authors from anywhere. It's a neat idea to have little known ones though, although all the people I have so far are greatly talented.
    Thanks

Doesnt this (or anything pertaining to it) mean that (lets say just as an example) if *I* won the competition, and your company claimed the rights to the character; you could take legal action against *me* for publishing/posting online the character *I* drew elsewhere?

Wow, that seems a little , urm.. "not really worth it" for a shot at 50 bucks.

newmanga already said that the artist keeps the rights to the character, so that means the winning artist can use the same character in other places without anyone getting sued.

    Wow, she is really great!!
So is Superfly, I saw some of his work a while back and was really amazed, so I got him to sign on as a manga author/artist.
Now we have 3 manga creators for the magazine. It's enough but I'd still like to find one more manga author/artist though.
I'd ask misao, but from what I've seen so far it looks more like a manga directed towards girls, not that I'm putting down her talent though. She is very very talented.
    Anyway, thanks
    Later
