Just as pointed out in the BluWacky's hilarious review and Ender's excellent summary, it is incredibly hard to pigeonhole this series into a traditional niche. From the start, one can see this title flitting through mecha battles, supernatural fantasy, and high school angst. However, while there's plenty of inherent diversity here, this doesn't necessarily make this an outstanding title.

To be fair, there's a lot to like about Kannazuki no Miko -- the mecha designs are stylish, the evil minions are entertaining, and the OP/ED feature the *best* soundtrack of the season. In addition to these praiseworthy characteristics, one must admit that the underlying storyline for this series is gratifyingly epic -- on one side, there's two lone figures of good, protecting an unknowing world from evil incarnate. Quite frankly, it's clear that this series has all the markings of an excellent title, but, unfortunately, all hopes are dashed by an utterly dismal character roster.

Like the proverbial fly in the ointment, the characters of this series damn this title into oblivion. Given that the fate of the world rests in the hands of our two protagonists, it is thoroughly nauseating to see them meander around spinelessly, swayed by the excruciatingly petty details of high school society and hormonal exuberance. While this is infuriating enough, this situation is exasperated by the fall of the half-decent hero Souma, who turns down a heritage of evil dominion to act as a henpecked mecha errand boy, content only at attending to the untimely whims of his pathetic companions.

Needless to say, it's quite disappointing to witness how this massively-hyped show actually turned out. On the surface, Kannazuki no Miko may be quite attractive, but at it's heart, it's just a tease.
