I spotted this recent book "Digital Music Directors", at a Japanese book
shop in Manhattan. Its sort of magazine-like in format but its on book
quality paper. Very high quality but it ought to be at 2857 yen and 134
or so color pages.

Anyway whats of interest is the openning section is about the making of
"The Tale of Genji" concerts. About 14 or so pages long, decent pictures
and 2 pages interviewing Tomita. You can see him in the 11th of the 12
squares on the cover looking uncharacteristically stumped or startled in
back of a Wall Street Powerbook in back of. (Square #3 is synth guru
Hideki Matsutake).

A lot of the rest of the book covers desktop music production. Maybe
they consider genji to be desktop production taken to the extreme (well
you aren't exactly going to get a symphony orchestra on a desktop though).

There is a page covering his use of Opcode StudioVision and another
about the Roland Sound Space interface. Also pages on the diagrams of
electronic gear being used.

I haven't seeply explored this Japanese language site but I haven't
found much besides the photo of the book cover.

I didn't buy it since by the time it was imported to Manhattan and sales
tax it would have run me like $45.

There's a cute page with little thumbnails of all Tomita's synth albums
and then his Sound Clouds. It reminded me that I've forgotten or never
knew he one in Gifu between New York and Sydney.
