Um. Yes.. of course she's retarded. Seems as if technology is the one thing she is good at.

I think she is supposed to be a teen, and she acts like a child.. yelling out nonsense all the time.. Clearly her brain is not all there;)

She doesn't seem delayed cognitively at all to me. If anything she is the exact opposite! I don't think that her acting crazy makes her a child, I know a lot of very intelligent people who act insane, I'd say she has more of a creative personality...blah blah blah

    Um..

    If a TEENAGER

    1.) babbles nonsense frequently

2.) says stuff like "if you see a stranger, follow him" (AND puts it into practice)

3.) Goes around yelling " where are you mr.spooky alien", when there's some creature seriously harming people around her.

4.) says things twice for no possible reason.

5.) Almost kills plants when told to water them

then in my mind, they are teenager hasn't developed mentally .. and that's the definition of "mentally retarded"

If she wasn't a teenager, then I might change my opinoin,.. but I read somewhere she was supposed to be a teenager.

Have you ever studied Piaget? Here are the stages of development:

Sensorimotor stage (Infancy). In this period (which has 6 stages), intelligence is demonstrated through motor activity without the use of symbols. Knowledge of the world is limited (but developing) because its based on physical interactions / experiences. Children acquire object permanence at about 7 months of age (memory). Physical development (mobility) allows the child to begin developing new intellectual abilities. Some symbollic (language) abilities are developed at the end of this stage.

Pre-operational stage (Toddler and Early Childhood).
In this period (which has two substages), intelligence is demonstrated through the use of symbols, language use matures, and memory and imagination are developed, but thinking is done in a nonlogical, nonreversable manner. Egocentric thinking predominates

Concrete operational stage (Elementary and early adolescence).
In this stage (characterized by 7 types of conservation: number, length, liquid, mass, weight, area, volume), intelligence is demonstarted through logical and systematic manipulation of symbols related to concrete objects. Operational thinking develops (mental actions that are reversible). Egocentric thought diminishes.

Formal operational stage (Adolescence and adulthood).
In this stage, intelligence is demonstrated through the logical use of symbols related to abstract concepts. Early in the period there is a return to egocentric thought. Only 35% of high school graduates in industrialized countries obtain formal operations; many people do not think formally during adulthood.

Now, you can't say that Ed is "mentally retarded" since if you have seen Bebop she is, for sure, in the Formal operational stage. Just because her personality may be weird and she likes to do crazy things doesn't mean that she is slow.

Not much.. just a week or so in an introductory college psychology course.

Yes, I've seen Bebop.. and I don't think I recall all of her behavior demonstrating " logical use of symbols related to abstract concepts".

Either way, I'm no psychologist.. I may be wrong. I have no experience putting those definitions into practice.

All I was trying to point out is that a usual, level headed TEENAGER (whatever her personality type may be) does not do the things I had listed above. (I could list more "crazy" things.. but decided to stop at number five).

I'm not sure if that qualifies her for being "clinically retarded".. as I said, I may be wrong. Either way, I really hesitate to put her development above 65 percent of high school graduates in industralized nations.(since your definition said only 35 percent reach the last stage).

well technically she had no one to bring her up as a child so...i guess she just learned differently...remember her father just left her at a daycare and forgot about her for like 7 yearas...

Malid sol that is very true. Ed is the funniest character I have ever seen in an anime series. She is also very cool. The second funniest is Goten from DBZ. "Hey Trunks look, that plate looks expensive!" while Trunks is talking about how to escape.
