This has puzzled me so. I THINK he is a boy, but I can't quite tell. He is my favorite character in the series although I havn't seen very many episodes. Ed Kind of resembles me, or what I would LIKE to be.

Yah I thought so but the only one I saw that really focused on that was when they first met, I think he was some crazy hacker lol. But they didn't know either. Ih well, he is cool just being an Ed.
Actually Ed is a girl, although when they where first designing the characters for the series Ed was originally a boy, but they changed this when it came closer to development. However it does seem that they kept a bit of a boyish appearance for her and also some other characteristics, however Ed is a girl.
Ed's a female....Watch the film and the series more closely. Remember in the film when Ed meets the transvestite hooker. When the hooker calls her a little boy, she replies," Ed isn't a little boy. Ed is a girl."
Kain and lucky is right. Ed is a girl. You can hear people refere to Ed as "her" out in the serie and in the movie, as lucky said, Ed says herself that she is infact a girl.
Ed?... Yes, she's a girl. It may not look like it at first, but she is. I think Ed's better as a girl, IMO.

None of the above? No, I think it's pretty well agreed on that Ed's a girl. An extremely bizarre girl, but a girl nonetheless.
You can't judge by the voice. Kids tend to have the same voice that you cant make them apart. I very much liked it when I knew that Ed is a very cool hacker and she was a she rather than a he. girls rock!
True in some parts. But in the episode her dad comes, it's actually kinda sad that not even HE remembers Ed's gender. Freaky huh? All in all, Ed's a girl, with a guy's name! -Seishin
That was more as funny rather than freaky xD It was like a hint that Ed's character and how she acts makes you unsure if she was a boy or a girl.. it was one of my favorite funny scenes

I read through this thread and well i just have to say this.. Ed Is A girl.. If you pay attention to either the first or second ep that Ed is in you will hear Faye yell at the end of the show.. YOUR A GIRL.. or something like that..
