Recreation Don't wish ill on that character!

Have you ever been told not to wish any ill on characters you really, really don't like by somebody? I've been told that after getting stuff off my chest about the anime characters I didn't like, beacause I felt like no one else would listen (the person who told me is not a family member). When this person told me that, I felt like my right to express my opinion was violated. Has this ever happened to you? I mean, here, we can say how we feel without fear of being told not to. There are many characters we don't like, and wish they would get beaten up or killed off in the story.

 

I think everyone has a right to their own opinion. You have as much a right to say "I hate that character" as someone does to say "I like that character". That doesn't mean that someone should tell you not to express your opinion, though. When they do that, it DOES make you feel pretty bad, Usually if that happens between me and other people, it starts a largely pointless and silly argument. It would be better to simply say, "Well, okay, that's what you think, and this is what I think."

I guess the best solution for someone who says "Stop saying that!" would be to tell them that it's just your opinion and that you aren't going to force them to see it your way; they can think what they want and you should be able to, too.

 

What the hell? They're fictional characters, for crying out loud! Is it really so important that someone would really argue with you about that? Honestly ... can people not find better things to do with their time than whine because they know someone with a different opinion than theirs?
You're right: it is your right to have an opinion about something, and your right to express it. But if someone's really nagging you about it that much, just don't talk about it when they're around. If they want to be so petty, do they really matter?

 

Well, it depends. Everybody has freedom of speech, obviously. What I hate is when someone takes their opinion for a fact. For example, someone goes and says something like this: "This Character sucks! Everybody knows that! You're an idiot if you like him/her" and things like that.. They really annoy the living daylights out of me. It's your opinion, fine, but it just IS an opinion.

I've been told things like that about things I like, and I found that often it would end in a flame war- and childish name-calling.
I'm all for other people having opinions, but the rights of one end where the rights of another begin.
