My buddy was making an awesome dragon sculpture yesterday (which turned out brilliant) and I felt like trying sculpting myself. So she gave me a chunk of her plasticine and I started sculpting away...
So I made a dragon thingy which looks like a chesspiece!
Anyway, it's my first time sculpting something, but I bought a packet of sculpting plasticine myself so I'm gonna make (or at least try) a big full-body dragon.

wow! That is really awesome, I don't think I've ever tried that sculpting plasticine, but if I did, I think I'd be horribly inept at being able to do anything half good. Really nice job you did there!

That looks so proffessional! You could make a whole set of chess pieces and sell em! Tell us more about plasticine, like how solid it is, whether it gets harder like clay, what you used to carve it, etc. Sounds pretty interesting. If it's cheap material I'd like to try it too.

Okay the material I've used was EberhardFaber Puppen-FIMO. It's sculpting plasticine normally used to make puppets with.
It's sort of like Play-Do'h, but much stronger. It does not harden in plain air like regular clay, so you could let it rest for a night and continue the next day, the plasticine would still be the way you left it.
It only hardens when you bake it in the oven, which only takes 20-30 minutes at a temperature of 130°C (preheated)

Right now I'm working on a full dragon sculpture (sort of looks like the new Godzilla XD) placed on top of a jaggy rock I found next to my pond :p

Anyway, cheap material, it cost me 12-13€ for a packet of 500g, plus a sort of thick iron wire of 3€. Also, if you want to make big things, you'll need aluminium foil to make a "frame" for your work ,otherwise the plasticine would just collapse in a pile.
The chesspiece was plasticine only since it's nothing big at all, so I didn't need foil or iron wire for that.

To make this, I've only used my fingers, a wooden pointy stick (you know, the kinds where you poke food on) and a small flat screwdriver.
    Ofcourse you could buy all sorts of sculpting materials, but I'm keeping it cheap, maybe later when I have more money to make a hobby out of this ^^;;

Sounds like fun. The bookstore over here sells bakeable clay which is probably similar. I'm just not that good with ceramics and 3-D creations. Good luck with your dragon!

I only have experience making sculptures and pottery out of clay and baking it in a kiln. We used paper/newspaper if anything for that. I guess if you use wire and/or aluminum foil in the oven, it wouldn't dissapear. But with clay, you need air flow throughout the whole creation, or it will explode. At least in a kiln. I've used this colourful plasticine that's more for school and hard to detail with it. It never really dries. I hope to have my own little kiln someday.. that would be cool.

Hope to see your finished dragon soon ;)

I've just removed the hind legs of the dragon now since they were troublesome, and he looks better with just 2 front legs :p
Ofcourse I'll give him wings instead ^_^
I also need to fix his paws, they're unnatural!

But I'll take some photo's now

:glazed: Damn! Superfly you're making me hyped! I'll see what kinds of clays/plasticines my bookstore has... I think that stuff might be just fun to play with even if I can't make anything nice.

Awesome! heh, fimo... that stuff is amazingly firm (compared to scuply...) yea, It could serve as armor without cooking it... well, maybe not. anyway, I think it's really cool, and if you're good at painting or like painting... well, paint it!
