Stumbled across some of it today and had to watch. I feel a little odd after seeing it... not sure what my reaction is yet. Has anyone else seen the SMJ dub? And if so, what do you think about it?

Haven't seen it...figured it'd be good for one laugh (or cry) after securing myself the DVDs...

I've only seen a few opinions...and most point to that it is pretty, well, horrible...

I just want to watch them for a laugh... I heard that Bloodberry's voice is horrible (or was it all the voices...?).

You can't beat a pretty much all star cast of Japanese voice actors such as Megumi Hayashibara, Takehito Koyasu, Kikukou Innoue, and Imai Yuka!!! Now if Scott Mcneil's voice was in the SMJ dub I would want to watch it...

    *LOL @ Baka's new name*

Bakagata Mattsurugi... it has a certain ring. *snickers*

Okay, after sleeping on it, here is my (un) professional opinion of the dub.

Otaru: Strange "surfer dude" voice. Sounded like someone who did the DBZ dub. Gave me nightmares.

Lime: Nice voice, but didn't fit the character. Too mature and savvy.

Cherry: I think Juliet Sessario was her Dub VA. I like Juliet's work, but this just didnt fit either.

Bloodberry: Appropriately sultry. The one selection I was completely satisfied with.

Hanagata: ... very prim, proper, and .... slightly British o_O; Anyone ever seen the Nickolodeon show "Rupert and Friends"? He sounded like Rupert. All in all, though, I think he was well-dubbed. Goofy, yet never shrill, naive yet very mature, I don't think they could have done a better job. Bandai gets bonus points, too, for not finding a stereotypically 'gay' voice. ("Oh, Otaru, staaaapp. If you don't play nithly I'll not sthay!") (Incidentally, I *do* know who Hanagata's English seiyuu was; Bob Marx)

Hess: This worked fairly well too. Sounded a bit like someone from Pink Floyd.

Goddel: Sounded even funnier with that British accent.

Faust: .... sounded like he was 17.

    Tiger: Had laryngitis.

    Luchs: A very bland voice.

Panther: Possibly cribbed from the Sailor Moon dub? (suffice it to say none of the saberdolls were well cast)

Supporting characters, like Hikozaemon, Shogun Ieyasu (whose name no one seemed to be able to pronounce right, just as no decision was ever made between "Luchs" and "Lynx"), the shogun's doctor and Yumeji, all more or less worked. The dub didn't take many undue liberties with dialogue, either (as far as I could tell from my limited knowledge of Japanese and my well... obsessive fan knowledge of the subtitles).

Overall, I'd say it's more watchable than such things as the Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo! dubs, but not nearly as good as the Trigun dub (which is my favorite dub out there).

    Just my two mon.

Any word on how they compare to the fandub? Did that thing ever get off the ground? I've forgotten their URL.. Doubtless it is even worse, Bandai's, while it sounds like it is bad, is at least done by professionals, whatever that means

Hrm... do you mean the Fan Dub the Twisted Fates were planning on, Mamiya? If so, yeah, they seem to have left the project incomplete. Here's their URL:

    http://gurlpages.com/twistedfates/smj-main.html

I could be wrong, though... but to the best of my knowledge, they did not complete the project. Too bad, though... I woulda loved to be Hanagata. :(

    And furthermore...

Anyone seen the J Again dub? I know a different company handled it.

~ Lady Aoi: Strangely enough, Bob Marx's voice makes me happy... ^_^ la la la....

Saaa, too bad it's too late to do a fan dub of J to X ;_____;. That would have been a fun project.

Lady Aoi, have you seen/heard Gundam Wing in the English Dub?
To my ear, they used people from the English dub of GW in SMJ.
Otaru=Quatre, Blood Berry=Sally Po, Lorelei= Dorothy, in the English Dub) my only real gripe about the English Dub of SMJ is the censorship. If Bandai went with another group for SMJ Again, i would wonder who it is. As far as I know, The Ocean Group is the only Major Voice Actor group.

I wonder how Pioneer would have done SMJ...

Hrm... Otaru as Tenchi's English VA, Bloodberry done by Ryoko's, Cherry by Ayeka's, Lime by Sasami's, and Hanagata by Kagatao's? *L*

Ironically, there were a couple of times when I thought that Urara Takano (Tiger's seiyuu in the original Japanese version) had laryngitis.

That said, here is my official opinion on the dubs:

Otaru - Seemed almost bored in the first ep. (The tone of his voice said "Ahh great. Another beautiful day in Japoness...ho hum..."),then reminded me of the voice actor for Goku in the DBZ dubs in a few of the later eps

Lime - Okay,I guess. I think I prefered the actress they got for the J Again dubs better, though.

    Cherry - Same as Lime.

Bloodberry - Matched her character well enough,I suppose, but something about the J Again voice actress seemed to fit Bloodberry better than the J voice actress (perhaps because the J Again voice actress actually sounded like Akiko Hiramatsu).

Hanagata - Didn't really stand out in my mind. Not too horrible, but not really brilliant, either.

Faust - Don't really remember how he sounded. It's been too long since I watched SMJ dubbed, and I only saw the first two eps of J Again dubbed, where he didn't play a significant enough role for me to make a judgement call.

Tiger - This is without a doubt the casting choice that irked me most. I'm sorry but the sibilance with which the dub voice actress portrayed Tiger really irked me. If I had to choose one,I'd go with the J Again voice actress, but even then I wasn't too impressed.

Luchs and Panther - Same as Hanagata.

Tamasaburo and Baiko - This is the one area where I can say that the J dubs actually outperformed the J Again dubs. T&B's voice actresses here did a superb job conveying the characters.

Overall - I much preferred the J Again dubs, but neither one compares to the original Japanese (of course!:D ;) )

InuYasha - finished ranting and raving

Faust was the worst one of the lot. He had this naieve, slightly pissy-sounding voice, kind of like Heero's dub voice. It really didn't fit for such a mature character.

    Bob Marx!

    Lady Aoi -

I couldn't agree with you more about Bob Marx!! He's my favorite voice actor, PERIOD. Have you seen the El Hazard dubs? He's *incredible* in those as Katsuhiko Jinnai. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I enjoyed his work in SMJ Again and hope that Bandai uses the ANIMAZE group again for J to X.

sweet! I thought his voice sounded familiar!! I loved Jinnai's dub voice and now I know why.

And welcome to the boards, Mr. Potts. IT's always nice to see a new face around here, especially if said new face likes Bob Marx ^_^.

Thanks for the kind words, Lady Blue!!

I have to admit, I have been a Bob Marx fan ever since the first time I heard his Jinnai laugh! The whole thing with that character... awesome talent. I have been told that he is also in the DUB of Hand Maid May, so you may want to get that one too. I'm buying whatever he's in these days. SO it was an incredible BONUS for me when I bought SMJ Again, only to hear his voice (which I immediately recognized!) as HANAGATA!! Actually it was my 10-year-old son who picked him out.

I would like to find out more about Bob Marx... what else he's done, anime or live. He would have been an incredible famous radio star if he'd been around before the days of TV!

Thanks again for the welcome, and I'm sure enjoying myself here!

As Nanbara, I'm guessing? (thinks the fact that Bara in Japanese means rose and that Nanbara has been called "a Hanagata clone" to be hillarious

wow! It seems you have a very smart son with excellent taste!! ^_^

Well, you know what they say: Video killed the radio star :( And I think I was confused. I found Bob Marx's name when doing a search for Hanagata's English dub seiyuu, and I had just assumed that Marx was in J, not J Again. But since J and J Again were dubbed by two different companies.... o_O;;; now I have no idea who did Hana's english voice for J!!!!! However, I am still familiar with Bob's work because I do have the El Hazard dubs, so I can still safely say he is awesome. And I can't wait to hear his work when I get the J Again DVD ^^.

Thanks again for the welcome, and I'm sure enjoying myself here!

We're always glad to have new faces around here ^____^. Just PM me if you need anything!

    Hanagata's two voice actors

    Lady Aoi -

I don't know the name of the voice actor for Hanagata from "Saber Marionette J", although I do know that the work was done by Ocean Studios in Vancouver. Our man, Bob Marx works for Animaze (out of Los Angeles). They did the dub for "Saber Marionette J Again".

I don't know why Bandai switched companies, but I was VERY thrilled with Marx as the choice for Hanagata. (on the OCEAN side, though, I really love Lenore Zahn's work... she did the voicework for Bloodberry in Saber Marionette J (not "Again") and also did "Rogue" in X-Men: The Animated Series. What an amazing voice....

Back to Hanagata... I thought both actors did a fine job with him, but Marx always wins my vote. I still don't have the "Hand Maid May" DVD, but will get it this weekend and we'll see if you're right baout the character! (it's gotta be him though...)
