    Why is it that some anime releases are only available in dubbed versions? Surely it can't cost that much to add subtitling....even a good few DVDs are available as dubbed-only versions. As someone who prefares the original language with subtitles (in ANY kind of foreign language film) this can be a little frustrating. Having said that I do own a lot of dubbed stuff....then again, you've no choice really.

    some dubs area ok, but i personally hate most. sometimes the dub is the only version available for a couple of reasons. like, the show was edited so horribly that doing a sub would be more expensive as you would also have to retranslate the story properly and then possibly use a dual sided dvd(sherlock hound). as in, huge chunks of the episodes were removed.
    and sometimes, they just don't have the translation abilities. and then there's the fact that dubs sell more than subs and are therefore more profitable.

    I think both Subbed and Dubbed anime have bother their advantages and disadvantages. For example;

    Subbed:
    + The dubbed is awful, that we have to read to understand.
    - There might be some people who like to watch anime, but can't read; if it wasn't dubbed.

    Dubbed:
    + Saves the reading time or for thoes who can't read.
    - Sometimes it gets AWFUL!! And I mean AWFUL!! That I have no idea what are they talking about!!!

    Did that make any sense? I am taking a break from Microeconomics.. ^^;

    Some animes are simply made to be in English. For example, Vampire Hunter D, which wasn't dubbed in Japanese. It's okay though, since the voices were nice, and plus the characters were European-like rather than Asian.

    Not all dubbing is that bad. I think that it helps if you are reading a manga thats also an anime, it helps but a voice behind the words. So that when your reading it you know what the character sounds like.

    When I saw the Fushigi Yugi dub, I COULDN'T put the voice to the words in the manga! It would insult Yu Watase!

    I think I'm actually comfortable with watching Ranma 1/2 in English, simply cuz I've always seen it in English. (I watched the two movies a long time ago, then several years later I saw a few of the Hard Battle episodes in high school.) I guess since there weren't that many whiny characters, it was okay. (Whiny English sounds so ditzy and stupid, while whiny Japanese is okay.) Plus you get to hear Shampoo's Chinese accent.
