right. Here, have a link to a Washington Post article with info on bypassing region codes.
I would love for someone to point me to the law that says evading region protection is illegal. DMCA is probably your best bet. FFS the DMCA is a steaming pile.

You want to play it safe, that's cool. I think it's a bit of an overreaction to close the thread though and preclude any further discussion of the matter. It's just typical of this forum lately and why I don't care to be around anymore. I come back after a slight hiatus and the first thread I see ticks me off. later.

and you can use a computer to watch illegally downloaded anime. So? It's pretty sad when I can pay $40 to have a Pillows DVD imported (something that will never be one sale in the States for what it's worth) and I can't play it. And apparently I'd better damn well not ask for any help here.

Here's some food for thought: Is the board responsible for anything any old member posts here? Probably, but all doubt is removed when the board makes itself responsible. With a more laissez faire attitude, you might get someone from the RIAA or whatever asking you to remove information from the boards and you'd get a chance to do that. If however you go around actively removing anything that looks the slightest bit suspicious, you are showing that you know exactly what is going on and if something slips through, you're more likely to get busted for it. After all, you get rid of everything else.

Seems the board has slipped into just this vicious circle. If we delete one thing, we have to cover all the bases. The Cauldron like atmosphere surrounding Spam comes from this attitude. The loads of whiny threads from people who are leaving is a result of it. All the threads asking the members what they want, how the mods should behave etc were never necessary before but are more and more so now.

I am not some newbie with no clue about the history of this board. I've been around and I've seen how it's changed and I don't like what it's become. This may not be the most logical place to bring my reservations up, but the DVD region lockage was the spark I needed I guess.

    take it easy man...
this is delicate stuff.. as your concern is aunthentic and not as illegal
importing DVD ain't bad, but playing copied stuff takes the same to make the playback of imported... that's why we are so cautios about this stuff.

What sort of privileges don't I have? The privilege to speak my mind, to disagree with you, Mr. Anonymous Karmagiver? Not that your disapproval bothers me, it's nicely balanced out by positive karma from a source I wasn't expecting, and one that I'm quite sure carries more weight than yours. :p You are an example of what has gone wrong with this place.

SaberJ2X, I hear you. It is something that you need to exercise caution with. I happen to think you are exercising way too much of it, but our opinions differ only in degree, not in fundamental belief. Thanks for your offer of help too! (my DVD drive has been region free for years, it was a hypothetical situation)

It may be skating near the edge to drag out a karma rating, as that stuff is usually private. I just found that one particularly audacious, and sadly, also typical of the mindset of certain board denizens lately. I've always crusaded for harmony on the boards (and indeed railed at people for being confrontational like I am now), but I think some of you are striving for harmony in entirely the wrong way. Sometimes it's better to offer a carrot than a stick (ie you catch more flies with honey), and too many people around here are weilding sticks lately. Sitting on this side of the fence, I can truly say you bring it on yourselves.

Just contrast my honest reply too SaberJ2X with my reply to Mr. Anonymous. Who defused the situation, and who acted like an ***? (I'll let it slide that J2X was laughing about me behind my back lol)
