    Everyone in WoW has AIDS
    Posted 12:05 - 19 September 2005 - by Wil Harris

In an absolutely bizarre turn of events, a virtual disease is spreading through the World of Warcraft servers, killing off characters everywhere it spreads. The disease is a direct result of a new in-game instance created by Blizzard, which appears to be working not quite how it was intended.

There is a little info over at Shacknews, but the basic gist is this:

Blizzard adds in a new instance, Zul'Gurub. Inside is the god of blood, Hakkar. Well, when you fight him he has a debuff called Corrputed Blood. It does like 250-350 damage to players and affects nearby players. The amazing thing is SOME PLAYERS have brought this disease (and it is a disease) back to the towns, outside of the instance. It starts spreading amongst the general population including npcs, who can out generate the damage. Some servers have gotten so bad that you can't go into the major cities without getting the plague (and anyone less than like level 50 nearly immediately die).

GM's even tried quarantining players in certain areas, but the players kept escaping the quarantine and infect other players.

    How absolutely bonkers.

This incredulous scenario has equally bizarre consequences. Is this the first example of an in-game disease ramping out of control? Is it another step towards on-line worlds becoming just like real worlds? It seems likely that this 'escape' will go down in history as one of the events that defines the MMO-era.

I wouldn't call it AIDS, but more like SARS or Ebola. See, if AIDS had been transmitted as easily as in the game, we'd all be dead by now.

Hmmm, a bout of bad coding. It happens. Especially on updated MMO-stuff. Not exactly, "HISTORY OF HOW VIDEO GAMES ARE TEH NOT SO WIN".

Blizzard fixes this, then, three months later, everybody laughs...then everyone forgets.

Odd that it happened, but, it's happened before. Guild Wars glitched and turned everyone in Lion's Arch naked. You still had armor equipped...but you were running around in skivvies. Fixed it the day after. Good ol' Arenanet.

Strange that I did not seen this epidemic on my server. The auction houses in WoW are so clustered, it'd be easy to spread and would mean a large death toll.

Edit: After a bit of research, I found out was already hotfixed. Considering I took time away from WoW until after the outbreak fix, it's no wonder I hadn't experienced it. :p

Haven't seen it happen yet on my server, but I'd like to infect the Ironforge AH with it.. Hell, all of AH would get it, and then I'd take the tram to Stormwind, and infect THEM too.. Then off to Goldshire and Northshire Abbey! Yay! Newbkill!

It's a very good thing I stopped playing WoW before this little outbreak occured. >.> The thought of my defenseless little Night Elf dying to such a horrendous disease would make my stomach burst... WITH LAUGHTER! :D

:p Nah, but let's just let this be a lesson to all you little boys and girls.

USE PROTECTION scrolls or some such :p

I laughed when I heard this, since all of my friends play Wow and they all go it too.
