I'm not really sure if this will belong in this forum, but I found it very interesting and I use it as my philosphy for living and dealing with problems. It deals very much into stereotypes and other things such as racism and such so...um yeah...

It was original written by Aaron Alexovich and I have slightly edited it to make it a little easier to understand. Some of you may know of Aaron and what he usually does :catgirl: .

    Here's a question.

    Andrew, are you a...GOTH?

    Well, sure. Absolutly. Undeniably.
But here's the thing: I'm also a punk, a freak, a nerd, an artist, a writer, a student, a wimp, a progressive, a rationalist, a rivethead, a crank, an introvert, a Canadian, a "workoholic", a cat lover, a sentimentalist, a romantic, a sibling, a caffeine addict, a bibliophile, a web surfer, an audiophile, a humanist, a neurotic, a procrastinator, a designer, a voter, a friend, a migraine sufferer, a published author, the butt of the joke, an amateur psychologist, a tv viewer, a statistic, a seller, a buyer, a young adult, a "lapsed Catholic", an agnostic, a hopeful pessimist, a self-proclaimed intelectual, a sci-fi aficionado, a horror geek, a fan, an enemy, a wallflower, a collector, a comedian, a citizen, a recovering gamer, a supernatural expert, a human, a contrarian, a spectator, an anglophile, a "shoulder to cry on," a pretentious ***, a tough nut, a goofball, a stick in the mud, a low talker, a non drinker, a dreamer, a stickler, a dork, a grandchild, a wanna-be theremin player, a hulmerist, an actor, an opponent...and a thousand other things I could add and add and add. Just like anyone else.

    And listen...

...I have never read an Anne Rice novel, and I doubt I ever will...I sneeze in bright light, especially when coming out of a dark room...and I've met four other people with the same problem...Sitting on the floor of my room is a large plush "frog prince" covered in rose patterns and clutching a large "kiss me" pillow. My friend won it from a Denny's Claw machine at 4am, and I suspect I'll have the thing forever...I was attacked by bees when I was about five, but was mostly uninjured...Occasionaly, I wonder if not likely hip-hop music makes me racist, but then I realize thats just asinine...I never ever think about death...I mean never...I watch that "Queer Eye for the Straught Guy" show whenever its on, and I have no idea why...Just the sight of large amounts of cheese will make my stomach lurch every single time...I never really learned how to drive a stick shift, and I can't quite fathom why anyone would ever want to, anyhow...When I'm sitting on my couch watching the tv, I obsessively run my hands over every surface, dredging up these big wads of cat hair and such...I think things on our orb get better every single day...There was a time, not to terribly long ago, when I actually cared about basketball scores...and I don't hate the world, really. I mean, I hate great large chunks of it, yeah...but then so do you...

    And the point?

I dunno. Maybe the point is that, yeah, "GOTH" is one of the labels I've collected over the years, and thats just fine by me. I figure it's better to embrace hundreds of labels than to run screaming from each and every one...and remember: You don't know everything you need to know about someone because you've managed to properly attach ONE label, eh?

    So what do you think?

Thats the longest thread ive ever read. Its OK to be a GOTH, as someone said "whateva makes you happy". I dont label people, its easier if u dont. If everyone was the same the world would be a really boring place.

Wow, kudos to whoever wrote that because I think it's brilliant, not to mention an excellent way to view life. Stereotypes *are* becoming a major impact on society today, and people are constantly labeling (usually mislabeling as well -_-) others without even registering their actions. I think that's sad, because in today's world it's almost impossible to be "different" without slapping some inane overgeneralized label on your head. I applaud people like this man who choose to live their own lives the way they choose, without letting the views and labels of others stand in the way of their dreams.

Goth IMO is a clothing stlye as in wearing all black in a certain stlye. And im sick and tired of people asking me. "Are you goth?" And I ask them "What do you mean?" Then they say " That you dont believe in god."

    Definition of Goth:

Goth: n. A member of a Germanic people who invaded the roman empire in the early Christian Era.

Gothic: 1a. Of or relating to the Goths or thier language. b. Germanic;Teutonic
The rest is about Medieval times....
    5. Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. 6. gotic Barbarous;Crude

I love teaching the children new things and that is why I tell them this information if they ask me such pathetic questions.

Well first and foremost.. nope, can't say I've ever heard of this Aaron person.

Second, I find this to be one of the more pointless posts that I've come across, in all honesty and this probably belongs moreso in a more miscellaneous forum. Oh, yeah. It's absolutely adorable to see yet another person taking a stand against being called a "Goth", or standing up for people who are being called "Goths". :) Oh.. boo hoo.. you get a label. Cry about it.

And, I thought I'd also point out that you, Vicious, have officially contradicted yourself.

    Have a nice day. :)

You first started your post by saying that you believed the idea of "Goth" was in a clothing style...

Yet, ironically enough, at the end of your post you posted the factual definition of what "Goth" is, while tagging on a rather moronic remark to try and condescend other people.

That, in it's own way, is a form of contradiction and/or perhaps even hypocrisy.

I love teaching children new things.

I see where I made my mistake...

Goth...other people believe that that means athiest. So instead of saying whether someone is athiest they tend to ask whether you are goth. Also, goth to other people (such as me) is just a style in which how people dress.

Basically, I know the true definintion of goth just that I know what other people consider it as...as well. But I now see how I contradicted myself...

...Uhhh... what? Where are these people? I've never seen that link made ever. I've seen Goth = Satanist and Scientist = Aethiest, but Goth = Aethiest? Never... weird stuff.

    Then clearly, not all are.

Then how come so many goth pages praise a diety, a demon or whatever? And why do so many goths wear religious symbols?

I am often called a goth because of me wearing all back and the deep shadows under my eyes due to lack of sleep. People find me to be crazy, and ask me if I am satanic. My goth friends are either Wiccan, Atheist, Buddist, and some Jews. I think the reason they wear symbols, is simply because, well they are symbold, i cannot really explain it. My friends and I wear many different religous symbols like the Jewish star, the ohm sign, etc.

    Well not all do.

I know that some "goths" I know, wear the symbols so they can mock it.

i know i am a "goth" but i am also a fairly devout christian. i found a cross with celtic designs on it, so i wear it. i dont like light. it doesnt really bother me, but i am more comfortble in low light. most of the ones i know are christian. people ask me for drugs more than ask what my religion is.
i get nasty looks in church, but thats okay.
lol. again with the pep talk? the thread was about NOT WORRYING ABOUT THE LABEL.
boo hoo. we can believe in something without making useless, arrogant insults about counterculture opinions. cry about it.
