for tetsuo and chej:p . i dunno if you guys were serious but i did one anyway.:D . maybe someone will find it usefull.

    1. pick a colour, any colour, every colour's a winner.
    (a light one).

    2. use the burn tool set to anything under 20. (usually about 15 or so.) use a soft brush. burn an iris and shadow area at the top as well as around the edges. if one of the eyes has heavy perspective, change the brush shape to a similar oval as the eye.
    3. burn the area again, but leave the extremities so a nice gradient builds up.
    4. burn the iris and top of eye a 3rd time. just to make the iris near black.
    5. set the dodge tool to highlight and choose a smaller brush, dodge area that isn't burnt. i usually highlight the bottom of the arc the most. as with the burning, it's best to set the level nice and low and dodge several times to build up the gradient.

    6. in a new layer add in the white sheen. i usually do a soft brush for this as well. it's best to do this on top of the line art layer, then you can highlight over the line art.
it looks good to add sheen over the lines cause the white of the eye shines as much as the rest so it looks more realistic.
7.in a new layer add some shadows to the white of the eye with 100% black. use an eraser to taper the edges of the shadows. continue the sheen in the white part of the eye.
change the opacicity level to between about 15 and 25%. this makes a nice shadow level.:) .
    8. you can then change the opacity level back to 100% and add a slight gaussian blur if you want.

    los Endos.

remember if you don't like the colour at the end you can just put an extra layer on top and change the layer type to 'colour'. then you just add a flat colour and change the eye colour without losing all your work. (but it's better to get it right 1st time.)

i've still got the psd file if anyone wants it let us know. (i've chucked a colour change in there too.)

    hope this is good.:)

I've never tried putting the light reflections past the edge of the iris like that. But I have thought about it (the white of the eye being shiny too) because of my art classes. Just cuz of this lil tutorial of yours, I guess it'll be a new technique for me to play with. :)

It's a nice lesson in eye coloring. My way is a lil more "manual"--I only use two layers for everything, and I just use the airbrush and soften tools, sometimes with a lil dodge/burn at the very end. (I can't use too many layers or else my program crashes.)

Now this is the kind of stuff I come here for. Thanks for the tips. This should cut down my development time and raise up the quality of my images a lot. No more experimenting for hours on end with an endless string of layers for me. (At least for the eyes.) :)

yeah the dodge and burn isn't exactly painting. i do use the airbrush for most my stuff though. the burn and dodge isn't always clean, so i ususally set the airbrush to a pressure of 1 or 2 to clean it up.
do you mean 2 layers for a whole pic?

Big thanks mate, thats great! Gotta go try that out. I found a similar tutorial on some page but it was way too complicated for simple me :) This looks much more easy.

Yeah, I use just two layers for a whole pic (bottom for color, top for "multiplying" the lineart). But I save all of my area selections into alpha channels. Sometimes I do use a third layer for text, especially if the text overlaps some of the drawing. And in special cases, I use lots of layers, like when I make a montage of combined backgrounds and foregrounds.

i only really use the channels to create a transperency from my line-art or a special effect, other than that it's all layers. i remember one of my pics had about 40 layers.:p . the psd file was something like 300MB. my computer crawled...:D
