I checked so far there was nothing but you never know.

I was wondering if anyone has checked out F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon. There are demos avaible. I have played the full one. *whistles incconently* It comes out October 18, 2005. The website is www.whatisfear.com I got a really good desktop backround from the site.

Some people that I know say that it scared the hell out of them and they have played only the demo. I could see why. It is related mature. I didn't get scared but I don't jump when things pop up. I guess if you get really in to it I could see why. I was just wondering if anyone has checked it out or what they thought about it.

PCG seemed to love this game and I trust their rating system. I can wait a few more days for the official copy. Looks to be a good time.

My roommate downloaded the demo at one point, and I have to say, it was beautifully done. In a dark room, you'll be scared ****less playing this game. I don't want to ruin it, but... let's just say it looks like a lot of fun.

The game is spooky, but it didn't impress on me that much. I did finish the demo, but I don't think it's really that scary. I don't know, maybe it's because I don't enjoy FPS games anymore.

What's more scary is when you are using a camera to capture ghosts. Oh Fatal Frame/Project Zero. I loathe you.

When I am not watching anime and working. I just wish I had more time.

The games does look great on my computer and I have nice sound system too. I just wish my son would tell me when he awoke from his nap. Oops.

It is a lot of fun. But I still don't get why little girls with long hair covering their face is scary.

I think it's because I am asian, I have become immune to those.

Or maybe because my sister sometimes scare the **** out of me by doing that...

I am notoriously sensitive on horror-type entertainment... and F.E.A.R was no exception.

Just about every minite of this game creeped me out... I am THAT much of a chicken admittedly. Like in the demo... when you climb them ladders down and as you turn round and see "it"... OMFG, had to pause the game, and rest for a bit lol.

Graphics were pretty good... but like teddz, these sorts of FPS don't appeal to me anymore. More into teamwork types like Wolf: ET and Battlefield 2.

Umm... I don't mean to come across as an a**hole or anything, but FEAR really isn't that impressive. It's tedious. The graphics engine is subpar to HL2, (the outdoor enviroments are outright sh*tty, and the indoors are mediocre) the plot is relatively weak and it's really not that scary. Granted it does have its moments (i.e. Teddz's step down the ladder and BLAM there she is), but it's really just unsettling at best. I personally thought DOOM 3 was scarier.

In DOOM the things that scared you were the things that killed you. The same is true for Resident Evil and (my second all time scariest game) Silent Hill. In F.E.A.R. the only things that scared you was that little girl running around flipping all the lights on and off, and she never touches you. You have 15 minutes of action (because it takes you about 12 minutes to fight/reload/fight/reload/fight until you figure out how to get around the guards without losing all your life) followed by 5 minutes of static radio signals and dark coridors, then you go back to fighting. The enemies are almost exactly the same as the game progresses. The only things that change are thier uniforms and the select few weapons they wield.

There are some things that F.E.A.R. does include that I really like- Soft Shadows (which blur the edges of shadows making them look more realisitic), the FPS 'Bullet Time', the Shotgun and Plasma Rifle (both of which are absolutely sick in Bullet Time), a wider range of Melee attacks (I love scissor kicking evil combat clones in the face), and the Enemy Phone Coms. There's nothing as satisfying as hearing them shreik "GRENADE!!" as you plant a pineapple at thier feet, or hearing them scream "He's too fast" when you've got the bullet time engaged, or hearing them track their number of dead during a pause in a firefight ("Sh*t! Two men down!!"). It's definately a lot more 'inspired' than in other games like Far Cry. In FEAR the phone coms are meaningful and if you listen you can track enemy movement, what they're planning/doing, how many there are and an assortment of other things.

I also have to admit I really enjoy thier use of dust. In an intense firefight as bullets slam into walls it throws up thick clouds of dust that hinders your vision. These clouds prevent both you and your adversary from seeing one another and is a nice little add-in that really draws you into the fight. I wish Half Life 2 had included something similar as well.

Overall though FEAR has been done before and because it's really not that creepy it become tedious fast. I have to admit I was dissapointed. While there are its moments they are few and far between.

Run around, shoot, grope through the dark, shoot some more, repeat.

:Edit: I finally got around to finishing F.E.A.R. and what you see at the start is what you get up until the very end of the game at which point the plot finally comes together, and you go through a really cool exodus portion of the game. Frankly, my opinion hasn't changed very much save that the ending is probably the most fun part to play and that it at least gives you something above and beyond what you paid for.

I got this game a while ago and I love it. It's a great mix; horror and shooter. I may sound stupid because many people think that horror+shooter=DOOM or something similar, but F.E.A.R. is different.

The game is beautiful if you have the hardware to run it (which I do :D) and is worth a shot even if you don't, because this will run on most machines.

Anyway, getting back to the game, I love the ghosts in the game. It's very creepy how when you come around a corner you see someone walk slowly across the hall and then dissapear. The constant whispers are also very creepy if you take time to listen to them.

The A.I. isn't extremely smart, but they are smart. They communicate constantly, checking in to see how many members of their squad are left in a firefight, and depending on how many are left, they will react in a different way. I love that feature.

The creators also gave the A.I. a personality. While I was playing, I had wiped out 3 out of 5 guys in a squad. The remaining 2 were constantly checking in, making sure that each guy was okay. One of the soldiers was ordered to move in, to which he enthusiastically replied, "No f****** way!"

So, in conclusion, buy the game. If you're a shoot-em-up fan, buy the game. If you're a horror/thriller fan, definately buy the game. And if you just need a new interesting game, buy the game. I'm done. ;)

i know this post is lik extremely late in comparrison with others but, i saw a trailer and game play demo of FEAR. It looks fun and entertaining an' all, but is it repetetive? Are you in the same basic environment troughout the game?

As for the story of it... well i don't know much but it sounds to have a good plot.:)

I know this is off subject but, i wasn't too impressed with doom 3, it was incredibly repetetive, graphics were good though, but got boring for me.

Best not to reply to this cos its off subject.:)

Yes, it is very repetative. I can lay the entire game out for you by saying this: you running around killing the same guys over and over again, a ghost appears and flashes the lights on and off, you see a lot of blood, more bad guys, repeat.

The only redeeming qualities this game has is it's uuber cool last level, the bullet time, the enemy phone comms, and the always pleasurable shotgun. None of the other weapons did anything for me- they were all too generic.

Graphics are sub-HL2 (my current standard). They look OK if you enjoy sterile offices and lab spaces. The lighting is sub par as well. Soft Shadows are a good idea, but they turn the game into a slide show unless you've got a 6800GT with 256mb or better (or ATI equiv). Sounds are ok and in some cases creepy, but you get used to it very quickly.

Doom scared me more because the things that scared you in Doom are the things that KILL you. Your own survival is at stake and it up's the fear factor. In this game, after you realize the Ghosts don't do ANY appriecable damage to you (except in the rare, scripted instances) they don't scare you anymore. I ened up beating the game just to get it over with. Doom 3 was better in my eyes.

I probably won't get it then, can't stand repetetive games, Even though the gameplay does sound okayish :p
