Interesting conversation I had with a friend of mine today. We were playing 'Guess the anime character' and his first clue was that the character was fat. I was totally clueless and had to give up (It turned out to be Byakko from Yu Yu Hakusho). That got me to thinking about how few fat characters there are in anime. It makes sense since obesity is a problem with the West mostly and Asian countries haven't really been hit with it yet, but it's still interesting.

So I was wondering: Am I just missing some incredibly obvious fat anime characters? What are some you can think of? All I can think of are monsters and minor characters: Byakko, Fat Buu and Yajirobe (And Fat Gogeta, though he doesn't really count) from DBZ, and Iwanbo from Rurouni Kenshin.

There's that guy in Fatal Fury/King of Fighters that wore bowler hats.

    E. Honda in Street Fighter II the Movie.

    Saotome Genma in Ranma 1/2.

The Watermelon selling guy in Cowboy Bebop, and the mushroom selling guy in the same episode. (Mushroom Samba, I believe is the episode.)

Barret in Final Fantasy VII (Given, it's a video game...).

Takefumi Tonaki in Kare Kano. Well, he *was* fat, in elementary school.

Takumi's friend in Initial D. Well, he doesn't LOOK fat...but his face does, I guess.

There's a lot. But, like you said, obesity isn't the same problem in Japan.

Hart from Fist of the North Star was so fat that you could punch him in his stomach with all the force in the world, and the flab would absorb all the impact. (Kenshiro killed him though, by kicking his stomach so rapidly that the flab vibrated into a crater, and punched it in the center!)

I think it's a combination of both reality (Japan not having that many obese people) and idealism (artists would rather draw attractive/thin characters rather than ugly/fat ones).

But yeah, in my story/manga, I'm definitely gonna include slightly chubby people, as well as a few fat people.

Heh, okay, so there are a few I missed the first time around (Big surprise there...) Still, it looks like almost of them are minor characters with little impact on the overall story except Barrett, but he's more stocky than fat.

You're probably right, Seraphinx, that since thin people are considered more attractive they're drawn more often. Ah well. :) What's your story going to be about, anyway?

Hehe, do you see fat main characters in american cratoons? :p No, so the chances of seeing them in anime is very very slim (hehe, bad pun :p).

So basically every fat character in anime is a side character.... hmmmmmmmmmmm.... *is trying to think* Dang, i can't really think of any right now. damn ._.

Actually, Fushigi Rockna, there ARE fat main characters (Even fat heroes) in American cartoons. Off-hand I can think of Broadway from Gargoyles, Arthur from The Tick, Heffer from Rocko's Modern Life, Tummi from Gummi Bears, Mikey (I think that's his name) from Recess, Carl from Jimmy Neutron and Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants. So fat characters, while still not really common, are still MUCH more common and central to the plots in America than in Japan.

I mean main main characters. The hero of the show. Nobody really wnats to watch a show about a fat guy....

All the ones you listed are supporting characters/secondary characters.

*starts singing* 'I'm an annoying know-it-all short and spout....' :D

I know some fat ones. There is that Gung-Ho Gun from Trigun (nuts, I can't remember his name) and then there's the Baby in Spirited Away. Oh, uhm, I guess that No Face is fat at one point- when he's eating everyone (also Spirited Away)...

Darn- I was going to say Iwanbo, Novus.
