which do you prefer? hand drawn, or computer animated effects?....can you tell the diffence? i personally love computer animated. you can do so much more, although, hand drawn to look like computer animated is quite impressive if you can pull it off.

Personally, I love both. You have your uses for each and every one. Y'know? But, I guess it also depends on the series. With series like Full Metal Panic and Oh! My Goddess, I'd expect something absolutely grand, whether mecha or magic. But, in the case of Naruto, a slightly more "rustic" hand-drawn effect might be nicer, in terms of atmosphere.

It all really depends. If you're talking about out and out CGI versus cell-drawing...I'd probably stick with cell-drawing anyway. Although, Hoshi no Koe was remarkable in itself.

vicious, why would you post a reply if you were going to reply like that? is that all you have on the subject? and there is a difference. theres always a difference between graceful and technical. but if you see no difference, and thats all you have to say, then i will respect that.

Perhaps Vicious just doesn't know there is a difference...like me... I wasn't aware that there were any good/popular anime that were computer-animated, I've been under the impression that, as long as it's drawn by good artist(s), hand-drawn had a better quality picture than computer-animated... Could someone briefly explain the differences and/or give a few examples, and enlighten us uneducated ones (which may only be me...almost all the anime I've seen has been the dubbed and censored ones on CN...:shy: )?

    ...

well, i see hand drawn effects a being softer, more lively if you will. computer animated is harsher and more intense. it almost seems...unpersonal. you dont see many hand drawn effects nowadays because computer animated effects are faster, sharper, more easily "done" and you can add or take away whatever you want!

and incase you are mistaken, i dont mean computer animation like you would see in toy story or shrek. there are many different ways to animate on a computer. for instance, you can draw one picture, then by entering the correct data( you obviously need a program for it) you can make the one picture look like you've drawn 60. you can make it move, add it's sound effects, and add color aswell. it's complicated, yet its used most often. believe me, the effects and background effects you see in anime (eg. a sailor moon fight scene) are computer made.

I have to agree with Izzy there, depends on the series. :)

But I guess I like hand work with little computer tricks added, like the background or magic stuff. Now, if only I can remember what I saw that had both.. actually sometimes, the art work is so great that you can't tell if it was a hand work or a computer graphic one!!

Me and Sansa-Bean agreeing? It's like...finding two peas in a pod, only to have one be a tadpole! Impossibrable! GASP! ^_^

Personally, if you're talking about cell art, I really don't find it more "impersonal". Actually, Hino-san, I rather like it because the lines are clean and look better color-scale wise on component televisions than that of my more hand-drawn stuff. But, you're right, there's a certain mechanical edge to it...but I think that's just technology catching up to the industry. Yeah, handdrawn stuff is great too...but deadlines are oft hard to keep to. And this makes the job easier.

    ^_^

Either way though. Good anime is good anime.

I dislike the combination of hand-drawn animation and CG, because when I was watching GitS(Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone complex) the cars didnt go along with the background. Its like a car from the movie program Movie Maker jumped into this anime. Anyway, I admit that in other eps of GitS the cg of tanks and those robots blends in... So I do prefer hand drawn anime, but I can live with CG anime.

    Re: ..........

I don't like the 3d CG stuff myself, but 'regular looking' animation done on the computer does appeal to me. I really like the brighter colours and sharper lines. I loved it in FLCL for one, and I am glad to see it spread. Of course, those anime that look like that aren't quite as unique anymore :D

Technology is becoming more effective these days...
Do you think that CG effects will someday match the hand drawn anime? I have a feeling it will...and before we know every anime will be CG animated. i guess

You know tooms, I've seen some anime with cars, don't remember it's name, but the cars were made by computer graphics [no not initial-D, but that too]. And you can see the big differnce there and the low quality of the car while the hand animation werealmost as perfect.. =/

Most impressive anime effects I've seen would be Macross's missile launch sequences. Multiple missiles flying in all directions leaving behind tracers.... classic. :D

I agree with jindo's opinion on best scene. As for cg vs. hand drawn, that is a bit too general to ask. Almost every new series uses a little cg to enhance the effects of their drawings and I'm certain that a lot of the hand made drawings are done on computer now. For instance, Macross plus and Cowboy bebop are some of best examples of cg enhancement. Its more a question of style now more than hand drawn vs. computer generated now. Now if your talking about 3d animation, they still have a ways to go to match anything I've seen done hand drawn, but they are getting better. The 3d fighting games just boggle my mind. :dizzy2:

I prefer the hand-drawn visuals. The CGed just looks TOO clean, and often leaves out a ton of the detail you'd get from the more diverse hand done version.

Not to mention that there seems to be a lot more diversity in the stylings of the "old-fashioned". Much of the newer anime looks very similar in appearance.

As for mixed, I've seen examples of both good and bad. When there's a very clear difference between the elements, it looks terribly clashing to me. If the CG and hand drawn are very close in look and feel, it melds very nicely. Think of the Hydra in that Hercules movie disney did. A completely CG character, but shaded in such a way that it was very close to how the hand drawn/painted backgrounds and other characters looked.
