I'm not even going to consider making this question a poll. There's obviously too many options ...
Anyway what's your favourite musical or opera, and why?

I have a few. At the top of the list, Jesus Christ Superstar. A lot of people find it very odd that I have a significant chunk of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera memorized, and that I can sing several of the songs in their entirety off the top of my head. Really, it's the catchy music and the overall feel of the play that attracts me. Plus, I like the way Judas is portrayed and the guy who played King Herrod in the movie (as a funny sidenote, on the soundtrack my mom has, Alice Cooper plays him ;)).

Secondly, The Phantom Of The Opera. Lot 666, then: A chandelier in pieces. Some of you may recall the strange affair of the Phantom of the Opera, a mystery never fully explained ... I have parts of this one memorized as well. I guess that I identify with the Phantom a bit ... plus, Raúl's just a cool name. Sadly, my French was never good enough to read Gaston Leroux's original version, so I'm only familiar with Mr. Webber's rendition.

Finally, Fiddler On The Roof. I saw this as part of a class last semester, and I instantly was addicted to If I Were A Rich Man (All day long I'd biddy biddy bum ...).

Anyway, I'd like to know what you think.

    Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho!!!

methinks that Phantom of the Opera is my favourite, I also really like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, and Jesus Christ Superstar ;)

edit: Sorry for the confusion, threads were merged. I can't believe I forgot to mention Fiddler on the Roof back then. If you want to include movies with that then Prince of Egypt is one of my favourites also.

I really liked Yentl and The Sound of Music. I've yet to see Fiddler on the Roof, but I've been told it's wonderful so I'm definately (sp?) gonna have to check it out.

Well, I don't really like musicals, and I don't really 'get' Operas. If I was to choose a favorite, it would be Sideshow Bob's verison of the HMS Pinafore.

All I've seen of Godspell is the movie, which I thought was pretty cheap. I have a copy of the soundtrack with another cast, and it is much better.

    i'm weird

I like Jesus Christ Superstar, and that's where the similarities end. After that, I like all of Gillbert and Sullivan's operettas, Tom Waits' "Black Rider" and "Alice", and most of Bizet's operas.

    What's your favorite musical?

What is your favorite musical(of any type)? It can be from any time period, Broadway or movie. You could even say Blues Brothers if you want.

Mine would have to be Jesus Christ Superstar, but Little Shop of Horrors and Kiss Me Kate are close behind.

I like "The Sound of Music," and "Into the Woods." I haven't enjoyed too many others though. Especially "Grease."

Hosanna hey-sanna sanna sanna ho sanna hey-sanna ho-san-na
Hey JC, JC won't you smile at me
    sanna ho sanna hey, Superstar!

    Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you what have you sacrificed?
    Jesus Christ, Superstar
Do you think you're what they say you are?

    Your followers are BLIND!!
Too much heaven on their minds [...]
It was beautiful but now its SOUR!!
    Yes it's all gone SOUR!!

    Fools, you have no perception
The stakes we are gambling are frighteningly high
We must crush him completely [wait for it ...]
For the sake of the nation, this Jesus must die!

It should be obvious by now, but Jesus Christ Superstar is my absolute favourite.
Close alternatives include Fiddler on the Roof (if I were a rich man ...), The Phantom of the Opera (Lot 666 then ...) and Little Shop of Horrors (FEED ME!!).
