I hated this movie, cause of the senseless violence, "I know we start a club where we beat the **** outta each other", the whole idea is just terrible IMO

I hated the "idea" of it until I watched it. It's totally not about a club for getting in fights. From your response I have to ask whether you have really seen the movie. Sounds like you just saw the commercials, which didn't represent the movie well at all.

Fight Club is so quotable.. if I could just remember the lines ;) She's just polishing the brass on the Titanic, it's all going down man! (Martha Stewart haha)

Was an awesome movie, I thought. Though there's a lot of people who don't like it because of that silly reason that they believe it was all about fighting, which just goes to show they didn't really understand the point of the movie. But that's okay, it's their loss. Brad Pitt did an awesome job as Tyler Durder and Ed Norton was the perfect Rupert/Narrator(sp).

If you liked the movie, you should probably check out the book by Chuck Palahniuk, as well as his other books (Invisible Monsters, Survivor, Choke, Lullaby, Fugitives And Refugees, and Diary). (slight spoilers I guess) If you liked how this one twisted in the ending, you'll love his other books, as that's how almost all of them are (exception being, I believe, Fugitives And Refugees as it's a non-fiction title).

Tons of Spoilers in this Message

(If you missed my headline, I'm discussing many spoilers in this post)

I wasn't crazy about the movie either. It does a morph halfway through that completely ruined it for me. The first was brilliant, a vignette about the pent-up rage that everyone has in going about their everyday lives. I also really liked the idea of Fight Club itself and found that part completely beliveable and enjoyable.

That said, the second half of the movie was a huge let-down. The movie changes from being a smart and entertaining movie about disaffected society to some bloated, grandiose statement about how we're all empty, unfeeling robots, which I think is complete garbage. It also loses all realism. A bunch of guys getting together to duke it out once a week is completely believable. A bunch of guys living together to become one man's slaves is not believable.

And of course, the whole thing about Eddy being Brad (You know what I'm talking about) was stupid. I know Pitt's supposed to be the wild child that Norton's keeping bottled up inside, but it did nothing to reinforce the story except give a convenient excuse to show how screwed up Norton is. Helena Bonham Carter was okay, but her character was also too exaggerated and cartoonish to be really believable.

One last note: This movie was released before 9/11/01, and a lot of youths obviously clicked with its themes of alienation and mediocrity. Still, I think in THIS day and age, those same kids would want to kill Pitt and his goons for those acts of domestic terrorism. I hate to sound preachy, but seeing the giant fiery smiley face on the building is only funny if you've never seen a REAL building on fire.

any movie that manages to polarize people like this has to be good ;)

Whenever I see that last scene I think to myself 'they could never film this today' (post 911). The more minor acts (pigeons, film editing etc) still make me chuckle.

Sure the characters are cartoony at times, but it is still dead interesting to hear what they have to say (think of it as a morality play, though there's probably a better term). Helena's character was by far my least favourite though.

Maybe someday I'll get a set of leather clothes that will last me the rest of my life.

It's not good to the polarized people who didn't like it, MamiyaOtaru. ;)

But like I said, I really did enjoy the first half. I even helped form an inpromptu fight club with some football players and other water polo players. We only did it a couple of times, but it was tons of fun (Especially since I only lost once. :))

The ideals werent about being robots or slaves, they were about abandoning our useless consumerism and go back to the hunter gatherer ways.

Oh really? What of those who followed Osama and flew planes into buildings, Or those who stayed loyal to Saddam? (Or cause you know someone will mention it, those who follow Bush?) I think it can happen, even if it's a bit exaggerated in the movie. Tyler Durden isn't necessarily meant to be thought of as the 'hero.' He says and does stuff that make us uncomfortable, and make us think about and question how we live. Even if in the end we don't agree with him, we've thought about it and understand our own position better. That is why I think it is a great movie.

Just because someone doesn't like it doesn't make it bad. If everyone liked it, how bland would it be? Like 2001 for example. Some people hate it, some love it. Therefore, I think it is good.

Then again, some people love Titanic, others hate it. Despite its polarizing nature, I would say it sucks.. so what's the difference heh

I'd say it's this: Titanic was not mentally stimulating. 2001 and Fight Club are. *grasping for some formula* ok, maybe it's only intellectually stimulating movies that polarize that are good, cause they force you to think and understand yourself a little better, even if you hate it. With Titanic, either you cried our you didn't. Beh.

    ___________
in the end, I guess you are allowed to have your own opinion hehe

I kinda agree with Billy on this one. The first time I saw it in the cinema the secondhalf just felt like a cop out.
As a whole it's a good movie, but people remember it more for it's smart quotes and snappy dialogue more than anything.

Although when ever I see it today I just wanna puke cos of really grown to hate Finchers style. I saw Seven again recently and I just couldn't sit through it.

But like Billy said I really liked the small scale fight club aspect of it. People could relate to that. The preachy statments of the second half just totally lose my interest.

There was preachiness throughout though. The whole bit about the IKEA life, or Planet Starbucks, or Tyler and Cornelius' discussion in the bar before they fought.

Funny to see how someone people only liked the fighting part, while others found that the weakest bit :)

I liked the first half of this movie, and the last approximately quarter of it. I didn't like the whole scene in the car, where it's him and him and 3 other guys, 'cuz it reminded me of people I don't like. I also didn't like the chant that the club comes up with, y'know the one, (trying to not be a spoiler), just 'cuz they didn't get it, and it didn't make much sense. Then again, not much makes sense at two in the morning, when I saw the movie.

Fight Club was my favorite movie for quite awhile til I saw Cecil B. Demented.

Anyways. I loved Fight Club. The ending is one of my favorite scenes ever in all of the movies I've ever seen.

Maybe I like it though only because I wish to marry Edward Norton.

    Probably not though.

That's not the reason I didn't like certain parts. That stuph actually made sense, in a way. I just didn't like the whole manipulation schtick, which was really only the two scenes I mentioned earlier.

I love every aspect of this movie. Especially, once you know what's going on, it's really fun to see what we thought was happening and what really happened.

I like his way of talking too, even though he got it from a pr0n mag. "I am Jack's enraged sense of pride!" etc, etc.

I liked the actors, the idea of Fight Club and the fact that it has a terrific ending. Every time I watch it I see something new, something that I didn't catch before.
