    First of all: Be sure that every computer has the same Workgroup..to do this you got to go to right click on My Computer --> Properties ---> Computer Name
    now see the workgroup name if all the computer in your home the same then skip this step..if not then change it you got to click change then change your workgroup name ((any name but be sure that all of them are the same)).

    STEP 1:

    Be sure that your network IP Address is manually configured. To do that right click my network places --->propreties --> right click your network card-->properties ---> click tcp/ip ---->properties --> be sure that you click ((use the following IP address)) and put your ip address and subnet mask and the gateway also the DNS.

    IF you don't know your ip address chosee obtain then right click my network places--> properties ---> right click your network card -->status --> then click the support tab-->then save your ip address and your subnet and your gate way -->then click details save your DNS server ((they are 2 dns so save them)).

    Now you should have your IP and Subnet and Gateway and the DNS.
    Right Click my network places-->properties-->right click your network card-->properties-->click tcp/ip-->then click and use the following ip address and write your ip and the other..NOTE:((every computer in your home should be the same Subnet and gateway and the both DNS...ONLY your ip should be diffrent))

    It should be similar as the pic.

    Now just for cheacking that your tcp/ip work go to-->start-->run-->type: DXDAIG-->click network tab-->then test directplay-->then click on the tcp/ip service provider-->then click create new seesion--> chat menu should appear--> then go to anthour computer start-->run-->DXDAIG-->network tab -->click on the tcp/IP then join seesion..then they want a remote address something like that, type the ip address of the the computer who created the seesion then you should able the chat.

    STEP 2: right click my network places-->properties-->right click your network card-->properties-->click install-->click protocol-->click add-->click IPX...-->
    then click ok..do that for every computer in the network...
    then do the create seesion thing but by the IPX..if you able to chat then your finsh.
    But if you won't able to chat then go to right click my network places-->properties-->right click your network card-->properties-->click IPX then properties go to the internal network number it should be 00000000 then go to the frame type then chose Ethernet 802.3 then go to the network number it should be 00000000.

    Then go to start-->run-->DXDIAG--> network tab-->test directplay chose ipx then create new seesion. Go to anthour computer chose IPX then join existing seesion then you should able to chat.

    If anything went wrong just Replay.

    If you're only going to use two computers, you can simply connect the network cards with a length of crossover cable, which costs less than €5, instead of having to use a hub/router etc. You still need to set up the domains and IP addresses though.

    but with a router and the cable connection connected to a router rather than having a PC gateway it will be way way more secure as the internet doesn't the actual IPs of your machines

    You could use a firewall or a proxy server. If you really want to hide your IP address check out Steganos internet Anonym which gives a user a different camouflage address every second.
