... Well if its dubbed its usually set for release in North America, meaning its illegal to download.

If 'in english' you meant 'subtitled', then youcan in theory download fan-subs.

And then delete them as soon as the DVD comes stateside. They're ONLY "legal" until a US company releases it.

Would they still be illegal even if they had subtitles (nervious)? Oh well, if they are i'll just follow my law "Anythings legal as long as you don't get caught :D ;) ."

I'm talking in reference to all fansubs. There's usually an express written thing (in my versions of Love Hina, it's at the intermission screen between eps) that you should delete fansubs when they are released by the people who distribute them.

The original intent of fansubbing was to bring attention to, and show off the marvelous creation that is anime. In the past, very few things actually became licensed and brought over here, and if a fan wanted to see something besides Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or Dragonball Z, the only place they could turn to (besides exporting their own raw copy) was the fansub community.

By fans for fans, as the slogan goes. The intent is not profit, but to draw interest to titles in the hope that they get seen and enjoyed - possibly even licensed.

The big debate nowadays is if fansubbing has become overdone. Anime has now reached a higher level of recognition overseas, and numerous titles are seeing release from many now-recognized companies in the anime scene. If the intent was to draw interest to anime, then it's been done. Still, it continues.

It still isn't a bad thing. There are many fansubbed titles that never get licensed due to any number of reasons. And even those that are, often take a long time to get picked up or released officially. And fansubbing gives you a chance to preview the title to see if it's something you like.

Fansubs are never a substitute for the real thing. Support anime! If you enjoy a title, rather than cling to digital fansubs you downloaded, shell out some cash to do things the way they're intended to be.

To the original question - The more popular subs can be found on the KaZaA p2p as mentioned. Alternatively, you could try a Direct Connect anime hub, WinMX (be prepared for long queue waits here unless you're lucky), and several IRC distributor channels. Some anime trading communities also use Online hard drive services such as Streamload.

i'm all for shelling out some cash for my anime, but 20-30 quid per dvd for a 6-7 dvd set for just one series is a tad extreme.

True, that is a major deterrant to licensed anime. A lot of releases seem very, very overpriced, which turns many fans away. Kind of reminds me somewhat of the RIAA dispute over music. 20 to 30 bucks a CD, and usually you'd only want 2-3 songs out of the bunch anyway...but many, rather than fork out the dough, build up an mp3 collection.

Another bonus to fansubs is that series which have fansubs available longer before the licensed release tend to be more popular, more widely-known, more bought-by-fans. An example of this that some of my otaku friends gave me was the difference between Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres. FY was in fansub release for a long time before Pioneer released the American domestic tapes, and many fans bought the series. Seeing the popularity of Yuu Watase's stuff in America, Pioneer released AnC as soon as they could, but because it wasn't in fansub form as long, not as many fans were familiar with it, and it wasn't as widely bought.

I thought Ayashi no Ceres was released by Viz.....oh well, whoever released it, that still holds true.

I like digital fansubs for previewing purposes, but I also advocate buying the series when they are available in your area. Fansubs allow you the option of deciding whether or not you like something before you shell out the money on it, but they should not be used (in my opinion) as a substitute for the licensed, commercially released versions.

So yeah. Ummm....thingy. I'm really tired and not making much sense at the moment, I don't think.

and just remember, just because it's a dub, doesn't mean it's official...some fan groups did a thing called "fandub" involving taking ppl they knew, and dubbing the show hehe...before dragon-half came out, we had plans to do a fan dub of it...roles based on personality and how close to the japanese voice we could strain ourselves lol
examples are for the later episodes of sailormoon starting at about S. i have a clip of uranus doing one of her specials dubbed into english(which, that's a better va than the official one)

Biggest problem I've heard with fandubs, though, is they're more often than not waaaay worse than the official release dubs. My roommates had a friend who sent them a fandub to listen to, and told them it's one of the better fandubs out there (and no, he wasn't being biased for his friends). Considering how horrid my roommates found it, I don't ever want to watch fandubs. It's bad enough when trained voice actors sound horrible. I'm sure it's worse with amateurs.

Oh, also, if you see stuff by a group named AnimeJunkies, it'd be best not to download it.

From what my friend tells me, they know no Japanese and literally make up their own script to get their anime fix.

Yeah, but you'd think a fandub would be a lot of fun. In some cases, I can't see how a fandub could get worse than the original...god J to X is horrible!~ ^^

On the offchance you don't have this one, a completely free and legal anime download is the Animatrix, which is slowly building up the hype towards the next Matrix flick late rthis year.
