Geekositve or Negative

When you hear the word "geek" deos it have a positve or negative conotation?

For me and my family it has a positve conotation. Since my dad is an obessed geek even the family domain is omegageek

 

i think it all depends on how it is used...
when i call myself a geek or if a friend says "oh athena youre such a geek!" or if the geek is associated with an activity i love (i.e. band geek, drama geek, latin geek, anime geek, etc.) those are all absolutely fun and are kinda something im proud of ya know?
whereas if someone insults a pal when i mention them by using geek i will punch out their lights... or at least call them on it. or if some random stranger says "get outta the way ya geek!" well lets just say you wont like me when im angry... heh
so yeah IMO, it all teeters on the way it is being used... what an interesting little topic you've got here

 

To me there are two types of geeks. First there is the stereotype geek ie: glasses,braces, obsessed with computers, and a bad hair cut, loner, obnoxious.

Then there is the cool geek who is smart, bad hair cut lol, concerned about school, BUT, also has a sense of humour.

The first type I always don't like because they always act superior. However the second type of geek is cool and fun to have around.

 

im a combination of the two...
i have glasses...used to have braces...bad hair cut...well depends on whether having hair that trails halfway down my back is bad or not...ummmmm not obcessed with computers but i know a decent amount about them...i have a high IQ but i dont use it...(135 in case you cared) and im a comedian...complete funny guy...or so im told...eitherway what would i be classified as?

 

You would be considered a good geek in my eyes. *gives Hitokiri a good geek metal*

Anyway. In mainstream society, yeah, geek is negative, but I don't care.

 

I can be very geek-ish
I dont look very geekish yet im sort of geeky and ditzy at heart.
I dont look like a geek thou.

I'm a geek. When speaking of myself, I mean it in a positive way I love sports too, so maybe I'm a hybrid geek. Dunno.

I'm really not the geeky type. There are certain things that I'm a geek about though.

It's not a bad thing, there are some great qualitys in people who are geekish.

 

In general the word geek has a fairly good conotation for me, but that's because it is generally used by my friends, and I know they don't mean it in a bad way. Geek and nerd are actually used interchangably for me, but I don't know if that's true with every person or not.

As far as appearance goes....I wouldn't say that I look particularly geeky/nerdy most of the time. I have glasses, but they're fairly stylish, and I have at least some amount of fashion sense (not your sterotypical geek/nerd behavior).

Really it's only when you go into my bedroom or start going through my backpack that you really start to get the indication that I may not be just another cookie-cutter, fashion-obsessed type. More often than not I'm carting around several sf/f novels, manga, comics, or gaming books. My dice are almost always in my bag, and I have a tendency to babble on about the latest book/comic I've been reading or the latest anime/movie I've been watching.

So strange... i havent heard the word "Geek" over here in Scotland for quite some time now... last time it was in a drunken slur "Dont call people a geek, for it is a geeky word & if you say it then YOUR A GEEK!! EH EH AYE, you know you are"... so despite not hearing it fort awhile im assuming it's still a negative over here.

 

I realy think there is a difference between the word geek and teh word Nerd. My boyfriend says he is a nerd, not a geek.

What do you guys think?

 

i believe that a term that i happen to like more than geek is 'dork' its just.. uh....er...better
