Well, as I've only seen Robotech, and only the first two seasons at that, I'd have to say it's a battle between Roy Fokker and Max, and Lisa and Claudia. ^_^ I loved watching Robotech as a kid. It was a great anime. Sometime I'm going to have to watch Macross. I've already heard the Japanese version of Minmei, and I have to say that she's much better. Either that or my little brother's singing, "Splishy, splashy/ I'm feeling trashy" instead of the lyrics that went along to that song that she was always singing. ^_^ Gave him a lot of chances to work out the rest of the lyrics. Anyways, there's my two cents.

Have to say that Isamu is the best pilot out of all the Macross series. Anyone who can take on Macross by himself is a god in my book.

Most people consider Max Jenius the greatest but he looks like such a gimp that just turns me off him, his abilities seem overrated anyway.

I don't think Mospeada and Southern Cross really come into this.

 

There are characteres who are very popular and part of several sequels in both universes: Rick Hunter / Ikaru Ichijo, Roy Fokker, Max Sterling / Genius. Now with the release of the new Robotech series that could be showed in Japan as a sequel of Mospeada or Robotech itself you would have to add to that list Scott Bernard, Rand, or may be other New Generation characteres.
