This is a relatively new anime, about angel-like creatures called Haibane and what they do. I've only seen the first four episodes (it's a thirteen episode series), but I really, really like it so far. I'm very curious to see how the Haibane mythos works out, which is apparently what the rest of the series is about (from what I've read).

Oh yeah, and the guy that did the animation for Serial Experiments Lain also took part in this anime (he may have had other or more responsibilities with these anime . . . but I'm not sure what they are).

The music is very nice, though right now all I am interested in is the opening song. Does anyone know where I could possibly find it?

Has anyone else seen this? I'm interested in hearing other opinions.

Yeah, we shoulda renamed the thread I had in Serial Experiments Lain (before it went toes up) from "New Yoshitoshi ABe anime" to "Haibane Renmei". At long last, I would've gotten another reply.

I have the first four episodes on DVD from Japan, no subtitles though, so now I'm desperately trying to fansubs for it so that I can understand more of what's said. Guess I shouldn't panic though - I'm betting it'll come to the US in September or so.

Yoshitoshi ABe, the character designer for Lain, is also the character designer for Haibane Renmei. Only natural, as for this one he is also the originator of the concept and story. It comes from a self-published manga he wrote a couple years ago.

You want Free Bird, eh? Well, if you've got eDonkey 2000 or Overnet I don't think you'll have too much difficulty finding it, but it may require some perseverance.

Oh, and I love the show, and am loving it more now that I'm getting a chance to understand it. There was just so much I was missing watching it in raw Japanese.

SWEET, someone replied. You rock, YokoburiKinura.

A friend got me the entire series digisubbed. I only have one episode left to watch . . . and I LOVE IT!!!!! Almost every concern/question I've had about the characters/situations has been answered or at least addressed in the series, save a couple big questions, but maybe it'll be taken care of in the last episode. If not, well, my enjoyment of the series makes up for any complaint I could possibly think of.

When (or if) HR gets released in the US, I'm so buying it.

Speaking of Yoshitoshi Abe, didn't he do another anime called Niea_7 or something like that? Is it any good? I've heard mixed reviews about it.

It is possible to get a non-region coded version (I have discs 1&2) on the way, but with a little luck, high-speed 'net access and Kaaza, I have the whole series.

The art is simply beautiful. Presented in not-quite-widescreen, the whole series has a sepia tone that is quite appropriate for the town/characters/story. At school, just loaning out copies (LOANING- NOT RENTING) I've already hooked 5 ppl, and a classmate has sent the first disc out into the world with one of his friends.

Crap, just remembered. Odin is the friend who loaned out HR to a friend. Oops.

Well, gee. This is me not looking at names and feeling dumb.

The problem with me is that I have a habit of ignoring the obvious crap like that and then proceding to make myself seem a fool and laugh fiendishly while doing it. Plus, with someone responding to a post of mine, it lets me know that I'm not just wrighting to empty cyberspace (side benefit!)

I've run into non-responsive boards before, it's not pretty.

Niea_7 was pretty good I thought. I can see why some might not like it. The events and people were depressingly normal at times, aside from the presence of aliens :D Still, thumbs up from me. Ask YK though, it was his disks that I saw

As far as Haibane Renmei coming to the US, it's going to happen. PEA (Short for Pionner Entertainment America) and old Henry Goto are listed in the production credits, which means Pioneer USA invested in the show's production and had it licensed before it even showed on Japanese TV. When Pioneer does that, they seem to average about 11 months from first broadcast to the release of the first disc in the US. Therefore, I think the US release will begin in September.

NieA_7 was good. Some moments were better than others, and it didn't really have an overall 'plot' that 'went somewhere', but it did what it was trying to do (portray the normal lives of the characters) very well.

Ha! "Normal" nothing! How normal is it to live with an alien? Or to assume that an "indian" guy with an overly large head is a raging pervert? That ain't normal.

The wannabe Indian doesn't count. Besides, Mayuko doesn't really have to put up with him that often.

What I'm more talking about is it's not like NieA and Mayuko have to go save the stinking world or anything. And when it boils down to it, it's really just Mayuko trying hard to get by and get into college. People seem to say that once the aliens started assimilating the result was that life hadn't really changed all that much. That's the view I take. I'm talking about 'normal' for Mayuko, not 'normal' for you.

Still isn't normal, but it's about as close as you can get while still having aliens for housemates. :)

I just saw the first three episodes, and I want to know about the crow in the Rakka's 'dream'. Why couldnt she remember it in the first ep? Why was it trying to stop her from falling?

Aspects of the crows are explored more later on, as well as why the crow was trying to stop her, I think, around episode 8-10.

About a 10-11 month schedule after first broadcast in Japan. You could construct calendars around Pioneer's release schedule. Lessee, Autumnal Equinox should happen right about one month after Pioneer puts out last fall's TV shows...

And I knew a box would happen. Now I'll have both, it seems...

When I was at Malaysia, Haibane Renmei was one of the DVDs and VCDs that I bought over there. I've watched up to, probably episode 10. I can't wait to see the rest to know whats happening, I get confused pretty fast :p

I really want to know why are Haibane there for? What do they do beside "just being there"? Or why are they allowed to wear only 2nd hand cloths? What is the big wall protecting them from? What happend when someone crosses that wall? What is Rekka's story with the crows? Whats the story behind riddles to solve??!

I can't believe that watching the next 3 episode will might answer these questions..

Well, most of the questions get answered, trust me :) You need to think deep, kinda like Lain.
