    Here is the Senario.
My friend bought a computer with a windows XP OS. She didn't install any antivirus programs nor any firewalls. She hooked her computer to the internet. Just when she connected to the internet for th first time, and was surfing her internet service provider offical website for the first time, strange modal boxes started to appear. If you are wondering what are modal boxes, they are like alert boxes that pop out of nowhere, and here is a sample. These keep popping out, they are not run time, syntax errors. They are just alret messages created by some ppl trying to advertise their sites.

What is going on? Could this be a virus, worm's doin? Is it a hack? What should she do to stop this?

that's microsoft super duper spamming high way....

    to disable that crap...
    go to
    START
    select RUN
    type in - SERVICES.MSC
and look for a service called MESSENGER (trust me is not the messenger chat program)

then click it... once highlighted, right click on it
    and select PROPERTIES
    a window pops up
    there is a select menu
    most probably says AUTOMATIC.
    set it to disable
    and reset PC

this will fix your problem suzu

PS. next time.... blur out the IP adress... the 24.12.146.* looking thing

all I can say it's your giving you PC IP adress... like your house adress it's no concern to dial-up users... but broadband :-/

XP's got a number of security issues right out of the box. If your friend has not done so already, point her over to www.windowsupdate.com to patch up all the critical spots to protect herself from malicious attacks via the i-net.

bakkamatsu... the updates alone aren't good enough

I tried it... the MSblast got me even using the patch for it
    anyhow... get a Firewall
    most preferrably the McAfee Firewall
and set the SVCHOST process as BLOCK access to internet...
no more msblast or other virus/womrs attack

Maybe, but they are a better start than going out pre-patched with a big "Attack Me" sign, SabberJ2X.

Ah, Win98. So old, yet so understood.
