Hi there. Not only am I brand new to the Ramma franchise, I'm actually very new to manga, relatively new to Anime.
I've only seen 2 episodes of the show, but I've read the first 4 graphic novels. I totally picked it up in a whim, not actually knowing it was the same person who did an other show/manga I love, Inu-Yasha, although the simularities should have been more obvious. When I saw the show it certianly was.
I guess I'm lucky, because I don't actually have to buy a single book. I go to the large bookstore/cafe/record store and just read them there at the cafe and reading area! The only money I spend is on the good cafe drinks ::sips caramel steamer.::
In fact, the only other manga I've ever read is the first 3 graphic novels of Inu-Yasha, the first GN of Cowboy Bebop, and a handful of Lupin mangas.

Anyhow, I have a few simple questions for you guys. I assume there's only one Ramma show, how many episodes? How many movies, and what are they called? How many mangas, or how many graphic novels? How old is the manga?

    That's all :D

Okay, there are 7 seasons to Ranma. 5 actual full seasons, and, like, a shortened last two. There are 14 manga, which I believe is in full print already. As for how old it is, I'd say it's pretty old. Takahashi's style in the manga is more reminiscent of older japanese art prints than the more modern comic style that more manga are adopting.

Oh, and movies. There are 2 movies. "Nihao My Concubine" and "Big Trouble in Little Nekonron". Well, there are actually 3 if you count the "Team Ranma vs. the Phoenix" OVA that actually showed in theaters.

Which brings me to my next point. There's also a 16 episode OAV that's been released. This has almost nothing to do with the series and is certainly mostly unrelated to the manga. But, in my opinion, captures the manga feel very well.

There are actually 38 total manga volumes. Quite a bit more than 14. Unless you meant the volumes in circulation from Viz so far...

The original manga ran from 1987 to 1996 in Weekly Shonen Sunday.

She does have a distinct style, and you can immediately pick out work done by here. Compare the faces of Ranma, Inuyasha, Ataru, and Godai.

Wrong there. The OVA episode set pulls from the later manga volumes, and based on the majority of the content, it is safe to set them at the end of your viewing list as an "8th season".

Actually, the movies are the most out of place features of the whole set, since they are original stories not drawn from the manga. I didn't really enjoy either feature too well, as it seems Ranma just doesn't have the movie flaire to it. There were one or two larger story arcs of Ranma that would have made better movie material IMO - The Massive Herb Storyline comes to mind.

It's a great series though. I got started with the manga and read the wonderful Ranma Project's massive undertaking, which covered volumes 17-38 before I ducked into the Anime, which is fairly faithful to the original medium.

Hmm there's about 22 from Viz at my bookstore. So far I've read 7. Today I managed to read a manga that was the base for the episode I watched. Made the episode less confusing, and although the story was the same there was one basic elemant (a character) that was totally differant.

They tend to do that a lot with Ranma. Some storylines change complete portions in the Anime, some just change or extend minor scenes.

Out of curiosity, which episode was it?
