well, what fun would it be if i didnt step in to ruin your day by spouting history :p

well historically, this isnt really.....set at a date like Kenshin or Peacemaker.
but by references in the first series we find out that firstly the date is after the battle for Sekigahara which was October 21st 1600. And the Daikan system seems to be well in place. The clothing style is set at a more or less minimum of kimono and hakama which means that peace has ruled for a decent amount of time especially considering that fact that Nanban are in the country. the Sankoku Policy* seems to be set in place which also means that it has to be after the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu* who layed it down. Restrictions to the Nanban mean that the policy has been well set. Id have to say the date is probably somewhere around 1650.

The sankoku policy basicly cut of Japan from the western world. Nobunaga had welcomed westerners and they had come heavily into the country spreading christianity as well as bringing new ideas and technology. However, During Iemitsu rule, he layed the ground work for the Sankoku Policy. This policy barred the westerners from entering the country save for Dejima Island in Oosaka Harbor. The Sankoku limited trade with westerners to two Dutch ships a year onto this island but also refused to let foreigners into the country beyond Dejima.

Tokugawa Iemitsu was also the Shogun who wiped Christianity from the Islands. Nobunaga had been a Christian and welcomed the religion into his country. However, nearly 100 years later, the Tokugawa Family frowned upon this and began to wipe it out. By the time of his son Ietsuna rule Christianity in Japan was rare, and had gone underground much like Christians in the time of Rome.
