So I've never played FF7 before. I didn't play beyond FF3 or 4 come to think of it, because I stopped being interested in video games until I hit my college years.

Anyway, I'm talking to a friend of mine tonight. And this particular friend has been trying to get me to play FF7 for quite sometime. She also really likes Hojo, and from what she told me about him, I began to rather like him, too. He sounds like an interesting villain (albiet a minor one) with a complex personality.

Now, I'm aware that liking Hojo is rare in the FF community. Can anyone explain to a FF newbie why this is so? Is it because he isn't a major character (as far as screen time goes), or because most people just view him as nothing more than a mad man?

Well i'm a newbie on this site but in FF i'm an expert.
you probably like Hojo cus you've got bored of of the good guys winnin so for once you probavbly want him to win, in FF7 he hardly does anythin exept laugh weird and move his head like a rabitt. so really he's nothing. i was gonna put some more in but it would ruin your whole quest in FF7, play it its the best, FF.

Warning: Izzy's post may contain spoilers, but since it's been out for YEARS, this may not be important.

Maybe it's because Hojo pretty much started FFVII? His backstory is that he fell in love with Lucretia (Vincent's love), who loved him back, and had a baby with him. But, evil scientist (but a father who also wanted the "best" for his son) in him wanted to see what would happen while injected with Jenova. Lucretia dies giving birth to him (I believe). Hojo then grooms Sephy to be all evilly and everything. Then, Sephy doesn't know that Hojo is his father...and has a lot of contempt for him. Oh, plus he's the one who put Zack and Cloud into those Materia chambers. And he ordered the killing of Aeris's father, and the kidnapping of her and her Mother.

Freaking nuts, eh? Anyway, he's also extremely sadistic. But, in the end, it was all just an experiment to see what having pieces of Jenova would do when mixing into the Lifestream. After all, he *IS* a scientist...and he wouldn't do all that without sound theory would he?

if you have vince in your party when you go to the snow village, the flash backs make sense...the recorded ones...then when you meat lucrecia in the cave(in the pond that you tajke the sub too...) wher you get vinces' weapon...you get a bit mnore...but it's all in the game *^-^*

No, that wasn't Lucrecia. That was Aeris's mother, Infalna. You can see Lucrecia again in the last disc, if you take the sub and head up this river to a lake surrounded by mountains. You have to have Vincent in your party for it to work. If you're having troube finding it, it's usually one of the places that Ultima (if you can even call it that) Weapon settles over.

And yes, Vincent was *almost* Sephy's dad, but he wasn't...it was still the megalomaniacal scientist on everybody's hit list in the game: Hojo.

Errr...BB, I thought the Snow Village was how Aeris got to Midgar? And the Library in Nibelheim is how to get Vincent's story? Man, I haven't played in sooooooo long...

I may be slightly rusty, but I think I know my stuff enough...

    For the Tangental peeps:

-The Ice Village recordings are of Aeris' mother, as Izzy said. It is there that we learn Hojo takes her forcefully away to conduct experiments on her.

-For Vincent's past, visit the large crater that appears near the end of the game. You have to walk along a lake to a cave behind a waterfall where Lucrecia still lives. She is the mother of Sephiroth who was impregnated by Hojo as well as also infused with Jenova cells. I believe you have to visit her more than once and at different times to hear the whole story. This is also how you get Vincent's Level 4 Limit Break...

    Now for Hojo:

He's probably one tough cookie to fully figure out, as he gets little screen time compared to the main characters, and we don't get a fully detailed grasp of him like we should.

He appears to be your typical cruel scientist. In fact, when he's first introduced in the game, he's overseeing tests on the woman Aeris, and the creature labeled as test subject Red XIII. As such, he retains some kind of superiority, even when faced down to be killed after XIII's release.

Hojo's true aspiration, however, is to bring back the power of the past, the Ancients. But in doing so, he mistakes an acient creature of destruction as one. Finding and reviving parts of what was known as Jenova, Hojo creates and clones test subjects, creating many monstrous results. Reaching the height of madness, he creates a complete clone of Jenova in Sephiroth and several others from him.

Eventually consumed by madness, he infuses himself, in stalling for Sephiroth's attempts to injure the planet to the extent that he becomes a god...

Very complicated, and hard to probably understand unless you've gone through the game...

Why is he not liked? I could answer that differently depending on if you're asking "why is he hated, or disliked?" or "why is he not a usual favored character?"

Why he would be hated or disliked
Hojo seems not to care for a lot of individuals, including himself. He treats Aeris (and her mother before her) as a lab animal rather than a person. He breeds a world-threatening monster. And when things get scary, he just laughs in everyone else's face.

Why he is not usually a favorite, even if not disliked
Hojo doesn't exactly stand out in FF7 with so many other vivid characters, and it tends to be that most who favor the villains look to Sephiroth for their fix, with Hojo in the background as he was in the game. There should be a number of Hojo supporters, though, just as there should be Scarlet, Heideggar, and Palmer fans...

Hope that sheds a litle light, Aoi-chan...and give my regards to Xel! ;)

    Ya mean Heidegger has *supporters*?

    Oh my....

I'm tired. Words are blurring together. But thank you for the help, Matt.
