I was really surprised to see how many of you Gundam Wing fans HATED Mobile Suit Gundam! The two shows are a heck of a lot more similar than you might realize... I can't understand how any fan of Gundam Wing could actually *hate* Mobile Suit Gundam.

As for the movies, keep in mind that Tomino had to cram in almost a whole year's worth of episodes into THREE 2-hour movies. A lot was left out, but I thought they were much more meaningful and interesting than Gundam Wing. Don't get me wrong, I liked Gundam Wing a lot - but if I *ever* hear the word "PACIFIST" again in an anime, something's gonna snap. Gundam Wing was a good anime but somewhat disjointed as the characters kept changing allegiances. (This is ultimately a staple of the Gundam universe, but it was overdone in Gundam Wing IMO)

Also keep in mind that there would be no Gundam Wing if it weren't for the original. ;)

If you're unhappy with the quality of animation in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, keep in mind that it's over 20 years old... and they've become a lot better at animation techniques and quality in the meantime. But - in my opinion - the storyline in MS Gundam is much better than Gundam Wing. MUCH better. And I enjoyed Gundam Wing quite a bit, too.

That's just my $0.02. Couldn't stand to sit here and see MS Gundam get bashed like that without defending it. :D

Well, I'll just give you the heads-up and remind everybody out there what happens when we all stop respecting each other's right to have an individual opinion.

See, I thought MSG (not the preservative, the anime) had some cool Mobile Suits in it, and the action was actually pretty good. The problems I had were that I found the plot to be lacking a bit of ... well, it lacked depth, either that, or logic. I also found the main character to be a whiny loser, sort of like Luke Skywalker was in A New Hope. The difference is that Skywalker developed as his story unfolded, and as far as I can tell, this guy was always just a whiner.
On reflection, however, I withdraw my remarks that Mobile Suit Gundam is the "worst anime ever". I just remembered how bad Big Wars is ... watching that, I have to think to myself, "Mobile Suit Gundam looks pretty good about now ..."
Again, just my opinion. I can give you no more; You expect no less.

And now a message from one of your local Admins...

I would like to butt in quickly before any mass-flaming occurs, just for a few quick words:

Here on the boards we'd like to think that everyone is free to discuss their own opinions without any sort of harrassment. Actually, I encourage you to get out on the boards and post all you love, and with just as much emphasis, what you hate... after all, everyone shares different likes and dislikes.

Case in point, the opinions on the boards here at M2A presented by members don't necessarily mean the whole community is in agreeance (nor should it be, or it's Attack of The Clones all over again...)

With this, also please try to remember your netiquitte... just because someone hates something you like (and vice versa), there's no reason to go in, insults blazing in an attempt to force your thoughts on the other... And if they have any common sense, they wouldn't let you alter their opinions anyhow - because if they're forced, they're not really opinions at all in the end, are they?

Additionally, the meaning of a sentence (or its strength) may come across to you far differently when you read it than the original typist intended. Always assume the friendliest case whenever possible.

I have no fault with either of you debating this subject, as long as you keep it just that - a debate. Be respectful, and remember that no one is here to force opinions on anyone...

As for the actual subject content...I have seen Gundam Wing, but none of Mobile Suit. And I am a firm believer in not jumping to conclusions when it comes to Anime I haven't seen. So in short, I can't offer any opinions myself...figures, eh?

BakaMattSu, has truthfully broken "netiquitte" several times in the past... it can lead to some embarrassing situations...

Begging your pardon, Sir BakaMattSu, but if you would be so kind as to read the first few lines of my prior post, you will realize that I expressed my feelings on this very issue, in accordance with yours. Nonetheless, your words ring true. I will maintain my new keep-it-clean policy. No matter how messy the flame war, I will not let so much as a pinch of dust smudge my boots :)))!

As I always say, let's respect each other's opinions, and give BMS a break from having to post such long messages telling us to do so! :)

Thanks for the kind words - at no point was I ever personally bashed, though - you guys have been superbly civil. The only thing that was bashed was Mobile Suit Gundam (MSG - never thought about the preservative thing!) and that's just a friendly difference of opinion. :p

And I have to totally agree with you, Amuro WAS a whiner! He was way too cocky and complainey (ist that a word? It is now) for my liking too, I will definitely give you that. What had ME hooked on the show was the originality of the concept, the colonies (although that was lifted directly from a published NASA report in 1975 or so, the "Island III" colony system), the realistic political scenarios that developed, and so on. I think it was the attention to detail with the colonies that had me so impressed. That and the incredible mobile suits.

So before anyone else jumps in - absolutely no harsh words were ever exchanged in here (thank you!) and people's opinions - my own included - have been discussed in a maturely-conducted forum.

Whew! All them fancy words... ;) Thanks for the warning about BIG WARS, I have it on VHS but will watch other things first...

Well, I always like to let others form their own opinions, but I'd hate to see you waste your time watching a bad movie like that. But then again, I can't see you, and I'd probably need a really powerful set of binoculars to do so. Anyway, Big Wars was bad, but the worst part was that I actually watched it three times! The second time was kind of funny, because this guy who was there (it was at a friend's party of some sort) kept saying how it was the best anime ever, if not the best movie, and the rest of us all said he was a complete moron and asked him if he had seen the movie before he said that (turns out he had; he just had bad taste).

To conclude, be it MSG, BW, or something else entirely, we should just let everybody decide what to watch for themselves. Do not take the opinions of a couple of idiots (or in this case, the opinions of one Raving Madman) too far.
