It's character design. It separates him from every other character in the show. Couple that with his bandanna, and he's unmistakable.

    Like Ranma's pigtail.

Or Mousse's long hair and robes.

    Cologne's staff.

Shampoo's odango (her bulbs on her head).

    Akane's short hair.

    Nabiki's short STRAIGHT hair.

It's easy to recognize characters like that.

I think it's mostly about attitude. Kinda like embarassment/awkwardness is symbolized by a drop of sweat or love is depicted by big loving eyes, or such. Whenever character gets angry, they get fangs or a little >< appears on their forehead. You see alot of that with anime, it's just sort of a comical way to depict the character's emotion.

Yeah, the character, maybe coz he's the rival of the main character...? A pretty violent guy to start with, though I haven't seen that movie. Heh, and my uneducated opinion may not mean much because of that XD ah well, I tried :anime:

Well, if you want to be a stickler about it. There's also the possibility that the fangs came as a survival trait.

He's gotta be able to eat tougher foods, if Ryoga gets lost with apparently no effort. Meaning, more than half of that time, he must not have his back pack. Therefore, he has to rely on natural survival.

Or, maybe since he's so "undeveloped" mentally (like ALL the Ranma cast) that his own skull regressed into a pre-modern human stage...where we had fangs to tear through extremely tough meats or flora.

Or...maybe he just looked better with them. If Ryoga didn't have his bandannas and his fangs...who'd he look like?

A basic, totally un-characterized Takahashi boy.

    Or Ranma. Without a pigtail.

actually, that is wrong. The only thing fangs are good for is to pierce and hold on. Fangs don't tear, that's what the back teeth are for ;).

I don't think he has to chase down any live food and hold onto it until it dies. :p

It could just be that his teeth were always like that. My aunt and I both have "fangs", so there is a recessive gene or trait or whatever you want to call it that causes some people's canine teeth to be longer and sharper than most people's. Believe me, it's not a good thing. I once fell in the bathroom and drove one of them through my lip. I still have the scar.

Of course, that explanation makes no sense whatsoever, considering that he's a fictional character. :sweat2: Maybe Rumiko just thought it looked cute and decided to give him fangs. Or, like some of you already said, she did it to give him a distinctive appearance. Without some of the clothes, quirks and features she gave them, Mousse, Ryouga and Ranma would look exactly the same.

he would look like Ranma! because if u read the first manga of Ranma it shows Ryoga without the bandanas. Back then when Ranma and Ryoga went to the same school together. they fought alot! :bleed2: I like to think that i have fangs :catgirl: and i also like to bite. i think his fangs are to show what kind of guy he is, animal-like kind of guy... that's what i think...

it's real simple. Koga and Ryoga are somewhat the same character. Since Ryoga reminds me of Koga, it prolly did the same to the writer.

Yes!! that's what i thought!!!! :anime: when i first saw Ryoga i knew where they got the idea for Koga. but also, since Ryoga gets lost alot he really needs his fangs 2 so toughness towards an enime that comes by... i guess... :sweat2: but thats what i think...
