Every time I run my disk defragmentor, apart from it running slow as hell and laggin everything up, it never does finish. It'll analyze the drive, maybe start compressing files, and at about 5% completion, it'll stop and tell me "Some files could not be defragmented." and tell me to check the log for more details. Checking this log, it's interesting that almost every fragmented file is an anime episode that I've downloaded with BitTorrent, over 170 megs apiece.

I've tried clearing up hard drive space, I've run it with anywhere from 13% to 29% free space and it never successfully completes itself. Although I've noted it runs longer and gets a higher completion level when I've got more free space.

I'll admit I've been lazy about defragmenting, I never touched it once until about a week or two ago, when it first started. This log is from just a minute ago, though I've tried it with more free space, too.

    Code:

try getting diskeeper, google the name
    I forgot their page >.>

Windows defrag needs at least 15% free HDD space before being able to actually defrag. Burn some of those episodes to disposable media and try again.

I had tried that already. I had as much as 29% free space, but it still wouldn't work properly. After I found out it still wouldn't work, I said screw it and redownloaded everything I deleted. :p

I'll check out this diskeeper thing, GuyverJ2Xwhatever :p

Question, were you using the computer while doing this? Have torrents open? Doing any kind of work where the CPU is doing processing?

If so, turn on disc defrag and leave it alone for two hours.

I'd usually turn it on right before I went to bed, although waking up to find "SOME FILES COULD NOT BE DEFRAGMENTED" had me trying it at other times, as well, mostly to catch when it would stop working. My computer typically has 5 IM programs on at once and Firefox open a LOT of the time, although I've stopped using torrents for awhile. I think it's safe to say it was running by itself, though.

I've got Diskeeper running right now and it seems to be taking care of it even while I'm using the computer, I'll be sure to mention if it runs into the same problem.

I've been having the same problem. I noticed that it does that to me with anime episodes files. So I gave up on defragmenting :p

Even though I have nothing going on, absolutely nothing.

(But I'll get to that sooner or later. Maybe my laptop's HD will crash before I even remember to defragment it xD)

    My suggestion...

is to get software like Partition Magic, and partition your HD. Leave 20Gigs for your windows files (C:\), put all your program files on D:\ (another 20 or 30 gigs for photoshop, office, videogames etc), E:\ for your documents and important data (homework, etc - 10 gigs should be enough) and F:\ (remaining space) for your media.

An additional advantage to this is that if...when you have to reinstall window for some stupid reason like viruses or windows stopping functioning, you'll keep your data intact.

Also, ALWAYS REBOOT IN SAFE MODE BEFORE DEFRAGGING. This will keep your computer virus free so no viruses will write on your HD while you're busy.

Actually this could be bad if it gets too out of hand. Sometimes it may quit at an inoportune time messing with the data from a file, leaving it damaged from its original state. It should leave you core files alone allowing you continued operation but I've seen it 'damage' files before making unusable. I've only seen this once or twice in my lifetime, so I dont think it's a huge problem, just something to keep in mind.

It might also be indicative of damaged sectors on your HDD. Run Scan Disk and see what it turns up. If you have damaged parts of your HDD then of course the defragger wont be able to defrag those files.

Take Saber's advice and get a third party defragger and see what happens. It certainly can't hurt to try.

Interestingly, it always stopped while defragmenting my various anime episodes. None of them actually failed to work, luckily. I did run Scan Disk at one point, I remembered on my old computer the defragger wouldn't work if there were errors on the drive, and I'd have to run Scandisk first, so I did that, and the problem persisted.

Anyway, Diskeeper took care of it for me. All done, taken care of, and made better for it. Thanks everyone! :)

Luvweaver, I've never been a fan of partitioning, but thanks for the tip.

    actualy its 20%
it *can* do it with lower than that, but it'l ***** and be slow

and about it not wanting to move files thats because they're currently in system memory, the same thing happens if you try to delete something while its running
best thing to do is start in safe mode and defrag
that way almost nothing is being loading into memory

I'll give that a try when I get my free disk space back up there, then. As soon as I uninstalled Diskeeper it was all fragmented again.

Maybe I can uninstall Diablo II... I never play it anymore >_>

It had to be the obvious solution though... -_-

maybe if you finished 'organizing' your 'stuff' ;)
I know that takes up a hefty chunk of my HDD space

Defragment needs a hefty chunk of HD space for it to work. My advice is that you try to clean up the diskspace so that it will run smoothly.

If the defrag is still *****ing with you, I think it's time for a format.

Indeed. It's still givng problems, so I think I will have to go ahead and format. I don't have time now, but in a week or three I'll probably be able to go ahead and do that. I've got a lot of work coming up right away :dizzy2:

I think you were a bit premature in trying to take that work,
but this is why you make patitions out of your harddrive, one for windows, one for data
that way reformats can be done without affecting to much :p
