I'm a Holst fan, especially of Mars, The Bringer of War. I thought it was great how they incorporated this song into the Gladiator soundtrack :)

I am a really big fan of John Williams (composer). I don't know if anyone knows this but he did all sorts of scores for a whole buch of really famous movies like, Starwars( all episodes),Harry Potter, A Beautifull Mind, Indiana Jones, The Deer Hunter, Hook, and all sorts of others too but I can't think of them all........;)

I totally agree with you Stardust Phox about the Moolight Sonata. Its a really good Sonata. Oh and I'm also a really big fan of Mozart too.:D

Modern pop-culture (at least, in the United States) doesn't seem to appreciate a lot of instrumental music anymore. It's kind of depressing, really. One time, I played some instrumental Celtic and Classical songs and one of my cousins made this awful face and said "What's this?!" in a rather disgusting tone. The only instrumentals I've ever heard on the radio (besides on stations that specialize in classical music) are Classical Gas and Call of the Ktulu.

Current favorite instrumental: La Noyee by Yann Tiersen (from the Amelie soundtrack).

I also just wanna throw Danny Elfman out there (He did the soundtrack for Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and a number of other movies).

    They did???

Odd. I didn't hear it... ah well. I love how they used it in Robot Wars.

Useless piece of trivia: Mars, Bringer of War was composed in the era of silent films.

2nd Useless piece of trivia: My friend Sean cranked it when a hurricane came his way.

While I do distinctly remember a track from Gladiator that sounded *like* Mars (Was it "Barbarian Horde"?), since it involved the same note repeated over and over again to a distinct beat, I don't think that the composers actually integrated "Mars" into the composition . . . though it may have been inspired by the piece.

Or, I'm completely wrong and Zimmer and Gerrard really did integrate "Mars" into the track.

    I'm pretty sure it wasn't...

    Nope. It isn't.

I guess there was just a similar sounding piece.

Oh, I knew that the song Mars itself wasn't in the soundtrack. What I thought That Guy was talking about was that they took the song Mars and made use of some of it within another song.

Either way, it's not in there.

    I dislike being misunderstood. >.<

Yes, Barbarian Horde does have a part that's similar sounding to Mars. I just listened to it.

I dislike being misunderstood too, so here's a part of a review of the music from Gladiator:

"Ethereal, Clannad-like vocals and music that, at times, walks the line of Gustav Holst’s, highly influential, Mars: Bringer of War or Wagner, make their mark upon this score while Zimmer makes sure some of his more familiar elements are worked in as well. The militaristic percussions, strings, and brass accents found in such Zimmer favorites such as Crimson Tide and the aforementioned score for The Rock, rage in a battle all of their own with the classic Holst stylings making for an intriguing musical experience- well exemplified in The Battle, Barbarian Horde (track 3, 15), "(http://www.tracksounds.com/reviews/gladiator.htm#original)

But you can also say that John Williams took Holst's works from the planets as his influence for the Star Wars soundtracks (And please listen to all of The Planets before arguing!!!)

I would have to take a particular liking to Basil Poledouris. He's the guy who composed practically all of Conan movie songs. I especially love "Gift of Fury." He also did another cool song for Starship Troopers called "Klendathu Drop."

By New World Symphony you mean Dvorak's right? I played a variation of three of his songs in marching band during my tenth grade year.

Please.. marching band version is not as great as the real thing
I've played with a full orchestra on that piece. Nothing can come close to that one. By far.. it's my favorite piece I have ever played. :D

I was merely stating what I played, I never said it was better. Maybe you didn't mean to denounce what I said in that last post, but be careful: some people take a liking and pride to something they worked hard for, no matter how simple the task may be to others. Sorry if I sound rude... :(

Anyway, what orchestra did you play for, and what instrument?
