It all begun in the launch of the...
    486...
intel ruled the green pastures of PC computing...
    but AMD defied intel...
launchin their AMD486 (don't know the actual name)
intel responded with the P5 (pentium 1)
amd threw out the AMD 586
    intel integrated MMX
    amd threw AMD K6
    intel launched P2 & celery
    AMD threw K6-2
    intel Launched P!!!
    amd launched K6-3

by this time I was an INTEL fanboy... the P3 was the most impressive piece of silicon by the time...
only because of it's SSE, the problem was the FPU itself...
intel said IT WAS AN 7th generation CPU...
    in reality it wasn't
the FPU needed data in a specific way and didn't do nothing until the 3 units finished down their thing
then when they finished they did another chunk...
    THAT WASN'T EFFICIENCY
time passed and the P3 evolved to a 370 pin package
but AMD unveiled their AMD ATHLON (classic)
The athlon sported a Enhanced version of the 3DNOW engine
the athlon didn't have to use the 3dNOW! enhancements to beat the **** out of the P3
and when it did use the E3dNOW or 3DNOW routines...
    *Spock set to warp speed*
    but glory had it's defect...
L2 cache could only be raised to 350Mhz...
so it had to be multiplied
    1/2, 2/3, 1/3, 2/5...
    when it reached 1000
Intel again set foothold with the 1Ghz Intel "coppermine" it's a P3 with integrated L2 cache running at full speed
then AMD launched the "ThunderBird" an Socket A based Athlon with the L2 cache integrated and full speed
    it kicked ***
intel got desperate and launched the crappy P4
    LOL!!!!!!!
    a 1.2Ghz AMD T.Bird could suck up a P4 at 1.6Ghz

    intel made 2 things wrong...
1- SMALL L1 cache... it had inly 20Kbytes.. while the Athlon classic/T.Bird had 128Kbytes
2- Stupid long execution pipeline... yo, it's 20!!!! stages long meanwhile Athlon's is 9

an error could take cycles to flush the entire pipeline
    to make an defient act..
AMD Launched a EVEN MORE superior chip...
    the AHTLON XP
    imagine it's so fast
    that a Athlon XP rated at 1800+ (actually a 1.53Ghz) beets a P4 2Ghz
Intel got angry with it's P4's
So they introduced the NORTHWOOD, just a P4 with L2 of 512K and made with .13 micron tech
AMD switch to 0.13 after launching their Athlon XP 2000+
and the rest is TOO recent to name...
    remember
    you got question
    I got answer

not too techy.. i'm just a mere espectator...

p4 really did blow. From what I've read, the p3 at the time was capable of easily outperforming it, so Intel purposefully held them back so they could get away with selling the more expensive (simply cause it was new) p4.

AMD was floundering for a while, and Intel was going crazy with clock speeds. Is AMD back into it yet?

the linguist in me is giggling with glee. or something

The Pentium 4, at it's release, was highly over-hyped and underperformed. However, it has grown into the position of #1 processor, and the current line of p4's beat the Athlon XP out in terms of power and performance.

That said, the Athlon XP is still a better value, giving a far better price to performance ratio.
