True, he does refer to it as his 'partner', but I was wondering what type of weapon it is. Because it surely isn't a halberd. Halberds look way different that what Banryuu is. Is it merely just a giant sword, or does it have another name??

 

Umm, according to the latest translation of the manga I found on websites, Naraku also has two other incarnations named Mouryomaru and Byakuya.

They call it a haldberd, but it's not. A halberd is an axe and a pike at the end of a long pole. My dictionary litterally says that. I would classify it as a great sword, which is decently long sword that is incredibly wide.
