Right. Well, fish can be considered meat in certain diets, and as a meat substitute in others. I'm not a veggie, so I'm not positive. Anywho. That's the extent of my small fountain of knowledge.

    dude, Casey, your dumb.
If fish isn't a meat, then what is it? a vegitable? a friut? I think not. A fish is an animal, all animals have meat. Therefore fish IS a meat.

I think that in certain religions it isn't considered to be the same as meat, I fast on fridays from meat and I can still eat fish ;)

But I guess that that is just a religious perspective, and therefore I just fast from land meat or something...

but the definitions are as follows:

    Animal:
    1. A multicellular organism of the kingdom Animalia, differing from plants in certain typical characteristics such as capacity for locomotion, nonphotosynthetic metabolism, pronounced response to stimuli, restricted growth, and fixed bodily structure.
    2. An animal organism other than a human, especially a mammal

    Meat:
    1. The edible flesh of animals, especially that of mammals as opposed to that of fish or poultry.
    2. The edible part, as of a piece of fruit or a nut.

Meat is a very loose definition.

Hot dogs and chicken mcnuggets are also 'meat', but a lot of stuff that goes into em is not meat.

What you eat of the fish is its muscle, same with pork, beef, and chicken.

    Meat is muscle.

    But that's just literal.

    *pulls out his dictionary*

meat (n.) - The edible flesh of animals, especially that of mammals as opposed to that of fish or poultry.

fish (n.) - The flesh of such animals used as food.

Seems very ambiguous, ne? The definition of meat points out it the flesh of animals, but hints that fish and poultry are not. Yet the definition of fish goes and labels it as animal flesh again.

Bottom line is that it comes from an animal, though one without appendages...I can see where confusion arises...

...then there's the whole bird/poultry issue. All three definately have different textures to them...

Some people say meat when they really mean "red meat" (meat from mammals such as cattle and goats which are raised as livestock). "White meat" comes from pork and anything else that is mostly white and not "red." But my definition of meat is muscle fibers that are made to be food....you know, you point at your cat's leg and say "this is muscle." But once you cut it out it no longer functions for the creature as a muscle; it then has a different purpose. That's when you point to the lump of flesh and say "this is meat." If you're talking about meat as in a food group, then it gets pretty whack cuz some nuts and beans actually go into the meat group. If you're talking about purely common sense, well then meat comes from muscle.

Fish--well some people put fish in a different category because of nutritional/anatomical stuff, but when you get technical, I'd say that once you cook it up, it's also meat. (And in the same situation, put the nuts and beans in the plant category.) Sure, if you asked me what it was at dinner, I'd hold it up and say "this is fish" but ONLY because it's more specific. Likewise, I'd hold up a steak to you and say "this is steak." But overall, it's ALL MEAT!

I'd say they are meat, just out of convenience. But really, they are almost like meat, so it would be more accurate to call them "imitation meat" or "refurbished flesh in the appearance of meat.":dizzy2:

Ok, think of it this way... You don't call fish meat, because there is a better word for it (fish). You don't call a van an automobile, because there is a better word for it (van). You don't call an idiot a person, because there is a better word for it (moron).

However, this doesn't mean that they are NOT a part of the wider term. Calling a piece of fish a piece of meat IS correct. Calling a van an automobile IS correct. Calling a moron a person... uhm... I'll just pass on that one ;)

Frick yeah! That's what I was trying to get at. The root of the problem is the convenience of using one word to mean something else.
