FB looks like a really cute series, but I'm not sure if I want to get into it. Some people have told me "it's for kids," so I'm wondering, is it? There isn't anything wrong with it being geared towards a younger audience, but I prefer series with more substance.
So like I said, just wondering...

Well, if you look at it in the sense that most anime is targeted for a younger audience then yes, FB is for kids.

However, I feel that it can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. There most definitely is substance here. The characters are fairly complex and the story has a fair amount of depth to it (IMHO).

    No.

Why don't you try stop listening to stupid generalisations and watch it yourself. The manga is definately not aimed at kids, nor is the anime. Most of the humour is fairly adult, if not sophisticated and the last couple of episodes aren't the sort of thing kids should really be watching. But that said, in japan FB is popular among all ages of people, kids and adults, but over there cencorship is nowhere near as much of a big deal than it is here in the west.

Kids can watch it, but believe me most of the humor would go straight over their heads. I admit that there isn't much of a set plotline, but the great characters make up for any losses in that area. Not one of the people that I've introduced to Fruits Basket has not fallen in love it. So, I highly recommed you check it out.

Well, the story in the manga probably goes into a good bit more detail than the anime, there was just too much stuff to cram into those episodese. The anime is good for sheer entertainment, but the manga is good for story. And all of the characters have back stories about how they came to be who they are, most are quite excellent.
