Personally I wouldn't call that battle system "sucky" but to each their own. :) That's one of the points I made about it not being an RPG, but without the suck.

Basically it is a rollplaying game

you play the roll as a boy that gets ship recked or saves his sister

    And outher things

just because it dosent have the same battle system as FF? dosent mean that it isnt a rollplaying game

    Like Kingdom Hearts

    see what i mean

I see you are all lacking any kind of reasoning as to why you think its an RPG.... you don't level up, it's all real time combat, you don't learn new skills really(you get them all from items).... would you consider Metal Gear Solid an RPG? Same thing really. It's a pure action/adventure game boys and girls. Please, give me reasons, I want to see what you guys have to say. :)

    zelda is not an rpg

Zelda is not an rpg that i know. i mean you can tell just by noticing the battle system. in an rpg you usually have more than one player right, also you have a set position all the time but zelda has free movement and there is only one character. also you do not have the ability to level up and all rpgs have that. so all those reasons right there prove that zelda is not an rpg.

Well, it's not a pure RPG I think, but I think it's an adventure/RPG hybrid, along the same lines as, say System Shock 2 is a FPS/RPG hybrid. Not all RPGs have turn-based battle systems, look at Chrono Cross, Baldur's Gate, Diablo(if you'd call that an RPG that is), and many others. It is true that you don't go up levels, per se, but you do collect hearts which increase your life, which is kind of similar. And who says leveling up is key to RPGs anyway? You collect items and weapons neccesary to the story, which is RPGish. There are puzzles, and you spend some time going around talking to people. I think it is impossible to deny that there are not at least RPG elements in the Zelda games.
As uh... "persuasive" as these other arguments are, mine is better.

This genre is hard to describe, basically RPGs are games which has characters who can gain experience through battles and have level ups (E.g Diablo II and Final Fantasy [Turn based RPG] are classic examples). Games like Deus Ex although more categorically a 'shoot-em-up does have upgrades and improvements in armaments and weaponary, this too is RPG. Zelda seems to have none of these so technically it isn't one, but does does have a mind-driven story and you get to travel which shadow link 8 has already said.

    That too is true.

I most certainly consider Zelda to be an RPG. It might not have turn based battles and leveling up, per se. But it does have a cohesive story line, which, in my book makes it an RPG. The play style though, is definitely adventure style.

Re: Which Zelda Do ya mean??

Wind Waker IS an Adventure game. Like the other Zeldagames. With a little RPG. But it's more of an adventure game than an Action game!!!!!!!!

Zelda is Nintendo's franchise RPG. This game has had so many evolutions in its long history that it just keeps the fans wanting more.

I just seen a special in G4TV all about Zelda. This RPG (their words exactly) is making them killer dollars $$$$

I think it's all down to what the interpretation of an RPG is...

Grading by this definition alone, no, Zelda is not an RPG. The bottom line is that Link's survival depends on your button pushing - your reflexes and reaction. You assume his role, but how well he succeeds is not a roll of the dice - it's not a matter of chance, it's a matter of skill.

The aforementioned "sucky turns" fits this mold, as does tabletop pencil & paper style. Your outcomes are based on random seeds or die rolls. That rabid tumbleweed you're attempting to kill may take 4 or 5 blows or you might get lucky and waste it in 1.

...I do have quams with this dictionary definition, however. How important is a die roll, anyway? We're playing a game, and we're assuming a role. After all, doesn't it read "Role-playing Game" and not "Roll-playing game"?

Can playing Zelda be classified as "role-playing" and still be a game? Certainly. But, keep in mind, that same reasoning could apply to just about any game involving characters if you take it in that direction... in Super Mario Bros. we're assuming the role of Mario, in Tomb Raider, we're Lara Croft, in Pac-Man we're a big yellow puck that can't stop eating...we're acting out their lives, and thus, roleplaying, no matter how low degree it is.

Until everyone agrees on a concrete definition of what exactly makes a "Role-playing game", I don't think anyone can really give this question a deserved answer.

Come on you gotta be kidding.
the first one was better than the second.
But Link to the Past, Ocarina of time, Mask of Majora and the one on the gameboy(the name eludes me) were better in every single respect.

I always considerd Zelda games to be adventure games simple becasue they didn't carry much of the hallmarks of regular RPG(ie the ones you play with you buddies no VG ones)
RPG are mostly about your roleplaying ability and to a lesser extent the skills of the character(idealy). Not your own skills. Videogame RPG, although roleplaying ability isn't a factor your characters attributes are.
