cheap effect? you mean the gradient tool? its not cheap if you know to use it effectively. and here you did. I think both eyes are the best part about this piece.

Well, if you have trouble making your characters look male try some of these things,

Make the face slightly narrower and more pointed
Make the nose bigger and a bit longer
The eyes tend to be a bit narrower and smaller than female characters.

Thats jus some of my advice, dont wanna sound like a know it all or nefin!

you could also try not using skirts on guys. im serious, when i draw, the simple use of pants makes my characters more masculine.

yes that is very true. aviod using skirt type things on guys unless the character is in sum other way blatelently male. i thought it was a girl too. haha. the picture though is very good. the eyes are well drawn. and the color and ish is pretty good. a one winged angel? thats crazzyness. nice. but werk on the hands a bit more.. i dunno, theyre kinda skinny and small and undefined.

One Winged Angel - That's the trademark of Sephiroth ~_^
Yea is really does look like sumthing that should be in Zelda. If you really look at it you can figure its a male by how large those eyebrows are.
Also the colors you put around your character also give a suggestion toward what their gender is.
    Nice work. :)
