I just saw on slashdot that Square is going to merge with Enix next year. The CEO of the new company will be the same person that's CEO for Square now, so I guess the FF series is safe...
I'm not sure what will change exactly, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.
    Here's an article about it:

I read something earlier this year about Square and Enix merging,I really didnt think they would do it.But they did. With that said, the merger wont change anything much,(maybe some changes will happen, nothing big though...)the same games will still come out.

Tch. Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, ActRaiser, Brainlord, Illusion of Gaia, Ogre Battle, Paladin's Quest, Robotrek, Soulblazer, Terranigma, 7th Saga....

Should I continue my list? ^^

(BTW, StarTropics was an IRD/Nintendo production - not Enix)

In any case, I've heard of this merger for a while now, and I admit I have mixed feelings.

Both companies have brought forth some good titles, and both have long-continued series under their belt (Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy respectively). They'll no doubt have no lack of talent to produce titles of high stock.

The downside is we'll see less products than we would with two competing companies. Meaning it won't be likely that you'll be playing FFXII around the same release date as Dragon Quest VIII...I also dread the possibilty of either series being canned or any hybrids that could come out of things...

In any case, I'm sure it'll be good to have pooled resources to form a joint company of earth-shattering capabilities. But "Enix-Square" just doesn't roll off the tongue as well as "Squaresoft"...but, eh, maybe in a few months or years? And it's not too far off even to disculde Namco in the near future merging scene...

You forgot Bust a Groove, you fools.
Good thing or bad? I'll reserve judgement. To be honest, I don't think it'll have a hugely noticable effect. Both companies make highly enjoyable games, and I don't see why this mergance would have an adverse effect on that. I don't really like the name square-enix though. Squaresoft is teh win. Squaresoft.

I'd like to see a FF game made by both Squaresoft and Enix.If you ask me Squaresoft is running out of ideas for stories, and other things.Alot of stuff from FFIX was brought back from previous games.Considering Squaresoft already has FFXII-FFXIII in planning stages, they could use a helping hand.

And well, that was the point of FFIX. It was a tribute to those previous games. If you noticed where VII, VIII, and now X+ have been heading it makes sense. Up until VI it was always about the crystals, and set in a more medeival setting. But from VI on, they pulled away from that and made things more futuristic, technical, and completely did away with those notions.

And then, as IX put it, "The Crystal Comes Home". They did their last PSX game as a tribute to the Classic styling of the old school FF - IMO, the better FFs. The new ones just don't have the gusto they used to, and I personally had a lot of warm cascading memories of that as I went thru IX...
