I’ve heard different things about which games you can play on which console, and therefore I’ll try and see if anyone here can answer this question:

Is it possible to play a Japanese imported PS2 game on a European PS2 console? It would be great if you can, but I’m afraid I’ll get a negative answer….

It's all about DVD regions, I think the Japanese DVD regions have the same as Europe, or particular "Norsk, Svensk eller Dansk ;)". Not 100% sure about it, but according to animeondvd.com, they have the same regions, as in "Region 2".

But don't Europe and Japan use different formats for their discs?

I thought Europe uses PAL and Japan uses NTSC, like we do. If I'm not mistaken, you'll have to get it converted before you can play it, even if you're in the same region code. I couldn't tell you where to go to get that done. I've only ever seen one place where you could get done, and it's coveniently here in Canada. :p

Europe and Japan have the same reason but use didffernt formats. I dont understand why they are in the same region but they are.

Oh right, US and Japan users have NTSC versions of their DVDS. The same region doesn't effect us, but if you have a dvd player that can support NTSC files, then you are a winner, unlike the PSP, were games have no regions but the UMD movies discs have.

No, no, you just need to convert the games, not the PS2. Although if you plan to purchase a lot of japanese games, you'll want to get a japanese PS2; it'll be cheaper in the end.

Costs over here for converting a game ran about $15-30 CAN, depending on how big of a game it was. Dunno about over there.

Doubt that Scandinavia stores have game convertion. I'd chip my PS2 in the near future, it's much cheaper though.

Oh! No, I don't think you can convert the games anywhere around here, never heard of it before. I'll check into it though.

When you say "chipped", do you mean the same way as when you enable your PS2 to play copied games? (gomen, I'm a total n00b at this point ^_^;;)

Yeah, although boards.jp don't support those kind of acts, you basically "modify" your ps2 so that they can play copied games.

A mod chip would certainly help me out. Stupid region codes mean I can't play Battle Sabers. Even if it's not that great of a game, I have to play it at least once.

So there's actually two barriers you'd need to work around. The different format, and the region code. I guess it's their idea of imposing trade barriers or something. :(

Actually, a mod chip fixes the both things...

That, I have no idea. Seems you need to tweak abit with your front end (I don't mind really, since I have already sawed, and tweak my PC case :p) and that you have to swap discs all the time. I'd prefer a modchip, since they are much "safe".

Yes, those work. Most swap discs offer an option to choose PAL or NTSC before booting your import. I don't believe games use Regions - only movies.

If that were so, I'd have been able to play Battle Sabers. Japan uses the same NTSC format that we do. However, when I put the disc in my PS2, it comes up not as a game cd, but as a music cd. It's really irritating, even though I've been told it's not a very good game.

I don't know what I would do without a mod chip. Probably not play naruto or pretty soon bleach. I recomend having someone install it who knows what they are doing.

At least with my DVD player I can change the regions. Another problem when it comes to viewing stuff yes it is different from playing games. :p I like my Dvix player though.

What exactly is this swap disc method, anyway? Question's been bugging the hell out of me the past month. Google showed me a bit, but the trick I saw wouldn't work for me.

And terrible or no, you know I'll *have* to play it at least once. :p It is SMJ, after all. :D
