Who out there has heard of or likes the Japanese Heavy Metal group Dir En Grey? A friend of mine got me into them. I just wondered if they were a mainstream japanese band. Or if they have been out there for some time.

Are there any other Japanese Metal or Heavy Metal bands out there that you would suggest?

Dir En Grey are pretty good and they are rather mainstream. They are really popular outside Japan too, songs like "Child Prey", "Cage", "Zan" rocks.

Others can be Penicillen, Malice Milzer, Gackt, X-Japan, Hide, Luna Sea etc.

If these are examples of Japanese metal then i do not consider it metal, more rock... possibly glam

    Almost forgot...Mad Capsule Markets.

Well, not 100& metal, since they some japanese rap in it, but they got some heavy riffs with some digitalized sounds :)

I cannot believe you just said that. None of those are even anywhere close to metal. They're just like a Japanese equivalent to generic rock. Hells, my sister listens to like all of those, and anything even slightly metallic she just considers noise.

True, but Dir En grey aren't really 100% metal either.
Listen to "Cage" - Visual kei feeling there and later on to "Child Prey". Big difference really.

Novus, I really dont know why you bother to post in the J-threads. Its obvious that you dislike anything VK/Jrock...what DO you like?

If you ask me, there is no such thing as J-Metal. There are more heavy rock stuff like Shwartz Stein, Penicillin, Laputa, X-Japan, and some of the newer VK indies. However, most of their stuff would be classified under J-rock, or Alternative. (There is no japanese word for the alternative genre, but that's probably its classification.)

oh, and Dir en grey is perhaps the MOST mainstream VK band out.

Man am i the only one who enjoys a really sickeningly trashy dose of J-pop every now and again ^ ^
click here for the most impressive semi-animated flash style video EVER.

But on topic, i favour X-Japan over the others mentioned, dont know why really...

Just ignore Teddz' typo, and search for Malice Mizer :D (no 'L' in the second word)

But try the Pillows if you haven't. They are a lot closer to metal than some of the stuff listed here. Not that I need an excuse to recommend them..

Oh okay. ^o^ I'm sure i will have better luck this time around. Thanks for pointing that out. When searching for some of the other Japanese Rock/metal bands i found some of the Pillows' music. They're very cool, and i would probably have to agree with the way they sound. I have only heard a few of their songs though, but so far i am liking them.
