I was at my local anime store when i stumbled apon an anime i had never heard of before... called Jin-Roh. It's by the creators of Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
It's written by Mamoru Oshii, and includes heaps of big names like Takashi Watanabe Kazikusa Kise (probably not how u spell it:) ) production IG (blood the last vampire etc. It's a full 102 min feature That is similar to Akira and Ghost in the Shell, yet impossibly better than both!

How is it that an anime this good, with all these names, be totally unpromoted, yet catastrophic blowouts like 'Spriggan' and 'SIn' the movie spend a fortune promoting?

Has anyone else seen this flick or heard of it?

yeah, I've seen it. myself and a few of the eirtaku crowd watched it at an anime showing a while ago. i loved it. it's a pretty slow film, but it's really incredibly enjoyable. well worth picking up if you get the chance.

one thing though.. the ending.. really, it had me depressed for a few minutes afterwards, it's just so ****ed up :)

    Jin-Roh was not for me.

The film felt like it was trying to hard. It seems like all these big name anime people got together and said, "Lets make a movie thats really deep and has all this symbolism so that people will praise it as some great artistic masterpiece."

It seems as if the producers had a diagram of what makes some big artistic "great" movie and just made the movie to fit the formula. Its so predictable, and for me to be saying this means alot cause I can never seem to figure out whats going to happen in a movie.

Honestly, don't buy into the hype. If you want a good anime action drama get Patlabor 1 or Princess Mononoke.

    My 2 cents....

I actualy prefered Jin-Roh to mononoke hime and patlabor. I don't think predictable is the right word for it. You know where it's going, but only because it hints at it all the way. Despite this I think it makes you hope things don't turn out how you're expecting. I thought it was delightfully depressing, one of the best anime movies I've seen undoubtadly.
Didn't know it was directed by Oshii though. Figures though.

Princess Mononoke was one of the greatest anime movies i have even seen. It was shear greatness that can kill almost every other anime movie there is.

Princess Mononoke was a really good movie but it isn't the best. Ghost in the Shell and Akira won over Princess Mononoke but Mononoke wins over jin-roh...maybe..don't know close race....

i don't see how anyone could posibly say that mononoke is better than jin-roh. And quite frankly i think jin is better than both ghost and akira.. ghost was awsome, but too short for what they had in mind. it felt a little too rushed and would have maybe been better if they had draw it out a little more.
The characters in jin are also alot better than akira and ghost. i think akira could have easily wiped out every major character in the story without us really feeling for the characters. same in ghost. Thats also what makes the wings of honneamise so great.

no he didn't actually direct it, he just wrote it. the produces wouldn't let him direct it for fear he would make it too complex:D
so it was directed by the animation director of ghost in the shell.
i'm definetly with mordeth and drunlep on this one..

I loved that film. Its probably one of my favorite anime films (though I havent seen a ton of em!). I just loved the whole message, the characters, and the atmosphere of the film. They did a great job of presenting a world that was different, yet the same, as our own.

While I agree with Artemis's love for Honneamise, and it is quite possibly my favorite anime film (after much rumination on the topic, I finally decided I liked it more than Grave of the Fireflies, which I have had on the top of the list for a while). However, unlike him, I love Jin Roh too.

The reason Jin Roh went as unpromoted as it did was because the team that created it put the money into the making of the film, rather than advertising.

Jin-roh is pretty good. The Bebop movie is better though. Will probably buy it first. Even if they put an ugly cover on it. (starting to not like Sony...)
