  1. CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/) lists an upcome reissue of the
Kimba Symphonic Poem, with a note that this remastering was
supervised by Tomita. So... the previous release wasn't? How did it
survive the oblivion imposed on the legendary 4-CD soundtrack (which
CD Japan also lists, tantalizingly, but with a note that it's not
available. It came with a 300-page book? Oh, man would I love to get
my hands on one of those!)

    Anyway, the new release is:
    Symphonic poem: Jungle Emperor Leo
    Catalogue Number COCX-31629
    Media CDA x 1
    Price 2940Yen(23.16 USD)
    Release 2001/12/21
The awsome music for Osamu Tezuka's immortal masterpiece 'Jungle
Taitei Leo (aka Leo The Lion)' is now back, remastered under the
    supervision of Isao Tomita himself.

CD Japan also lists DVDs of the Symphonic Poem, the Leo 1997 movie,
and the first half of the original TV series. These discs are Region
    2 restricted.

    I'm not following at all

okay -- as I know Kimba Symphonic Poem was a video release from the
    early 90s (89?), right?

It was a long form re-edit? of soundless animation against a full length
orchestral suite then newly arranged by Tomita for the direct to video
release. I don't have it, thats just what I understand it to be. There
    was no CD

This is obviously a repurposing of just the music off the tape. It makes
sense it was remastered because while some people have big home theatre
systems, a lot probably didn't so I'm sure the original video mastering
    could be tweaked.

the 4 CD soundtrack was the raw music cues Tomita turned in for the
    series in the 60s

Tomita obviously does not like his raw cues turned into an album without
    asking him.

I examined the sealed box before it was withdrawn. I can't see how they
fit a 300 page book inside, though my memory might be at fault how thick
the book was. because I do rememebr the cases were slimline, but the
whole box wasn't huge. Sounds more like something in a Laser Disc set.

    There

My understanding is that the Symphonic Poem was first released on LP
in the late 1960s. My copy, Nippon Columbia CS7015, says (P)76.10.
YOu just missed a chance to get one on ebay; nobody bid on it.

It was issued on CD: Nippon Columbia 32C35-7528, (P)1985.6

The video was created by Tezuka Productions circa 1990, when they had
a remake series of Jungle Emperor running on TV. The animation was
brand new and designed to fit the existing recording.
You can still get a copy of this on VHS either on ebay or from
rightstuf.com. They have announced that they will be discontinuing
    the video shortly.

I can understand that. I still would love to get my hands on a copy,
    though.

Clarification: The VHS video of the Symphonic Poem says (C)1991
    Tezuka Productions.

  6. Some more history of Tomita's Jungle Emperor music, clearing up a few
    details that were left open:

. The first LP release of the Symphonic Poem was in November 1966.

. The withdrawn 4-CD set of music cues from the TV series contained 2
books, for a total of 300 pages.

    This information comes from http://www.kt.rim.or.jp/~nasu/
