... on top of other problems, my computer freezes last night. so I had to reset the bloody thing. for the longest time I hadn't seen the blue screen checking if my drives were ok... well I let it go and run through it all. but then I find out the torrent I was getting on D:/ was toast. so I restarted a new torrent and listened to some mp3s that were on D:/. an hour later or sooner then that it freezes again. this time, freaking out over my bloody torrent I, like I have done numerous times in the past, hit the space bar before the check begins. This time though I come back to my computer to find out I cant access D:/ at all. I click D:/ in 'My Computer' and it thinks for the longest time and then its 'not responding'. Winamp froze trying to play the D:/ drive mp3s. I got to System it says C:/ and F:/ are online but D:/ isnt.?? What is very odd is C:/ used to be my Windows drive and has these programs on it. F:/ is now my main Windows drive with tons of programs etc. while D:/ was just my extra space for mp3s, anime and digital photos.. so no programs ever were installed on there. so I started a virus sweep and it doesnt do D:/ cuz.. duh. it's offline. an hour ago I tried system restore but a bubble appeared saying it couldnt fix D since its offline and system restore is disabled on it. is this some virus or did I screw up freaking over a retarded torrent? cuz I am bloody confused right now.

edit: don't tell me its fried. cuz my older HD has gotten through so much worse then a reset and bypass...

I don't know what I can offer that'll be optimistic....

Enter your BIOS and check if the drive has somehow been disabled or if it can
    even detect it at all.

System Restore never solves anything. I'm going to have to make like Dell Customer Service and tell you to try reinstalling Windows, but it sounds like you might not be able to manage that right now.

well its very weird, last night SABERJ2X was helping me for several hours (thank you!) we came to the conclusion that it may be fried. it clicked a few times before it froze.. then I'm not sure if it did the second time. He told me that I should unplug the drive (the white band and multi coloured plug) so I would not damage the drive anymore if it is corrupt. I'm planning on bringing it in to microcool in London to see (oh.. I hope) if they can save any of my stuff on that drive. It's only 2 years old and its a 60 gigger. which. if any abuse was given is that it was too full. I guess... anyways SABER was helping me try to be able to still use my computer until Saturday (when I bring it in) but when I unplugged the cords there was some conflict. so through the BIOS screen I went to Advanced options(?) and was able to change the 1st and 2nd things to HDD-01 and HDD.. oh whatever anyways that didn't work either. so right now I just may not use my computer until its all fixed. but I'm confused as to why it died that piece of expensive.. umm my loved one.

so BakaMattSu, you think I should check through BIOS tonight if it can detect the drive at all? it was acting like a drive but that couldnt access it. had no information like an empty floppy drive in a way.

for a stupid moment I thought I bumped the tower and flicked off some on switch lol. and it was the first time I myself meddled with my tower. its kinda fun and I was so scared to blow it up but its just a bunch of expensive colourful junk put together and its very interesting how it can even work at all. wow.

    Ah the click of death..

I had that kill my drive a couple years back. Data recovery was way too expensive for me, so I went the low tech way. I put the drive in the freezer overnight. Apparently the temperature change expands or shrinks the physical components (don't remember which) and can jar loose a stuck drive.

I put it in the computer in the morning and it started up so I transferred everything to a new drive before it died again and all was well. If you do this, be very careful of condensation. Put the drive in a plastic baggie in the the freezer, and get the condensation off of it when you take it out into warmer air before sending any electricity through it :D

Just a thought if you balk at the price you are likely to be given to have someone else recover stuff for you.

    *edit*
"way too" not "way to" I swear, I have been online for too long, some of this crap is rubbing off on me. I get strange urges to call people "loosers" because they are "retarted." FFS people quit spelling like shiat, it's affecting me (end random rant)

Get the manufacturer's utility for the hard drive, and test it. It's the only way to know for sure.

edit: Also, open your computer up, and disconnect the ribbon cable from the HDD to the Motherboard, then reconnect it. [/edit]

update: Ark, I did that btw, Saber told me I should disconnect the ribbon and wires to prevent further corruption of the hard drive, and I did plug it back in.. but zippo.
hmm MO I think I recall the freezer drive episode now! I didnt try that :( my luck I'd probably get electrocuted.
Anyways the update. I brought it in for a recovery. the TOD I guess table of directories is toast. The drive was installed when I had my old motherboard and it was Fat32 anyways.
The store didnt have the equipment to retrieve it they tried 3 times and it kept crashing at the critical point. It must have been after 91% because I phoned then and they said all was cool. damnit.
Anyways, up and running with a few new drives and new windows. just need to install things. I lost all files on D, I dont know if the freezer thing would work now that its been through a recovery attempt 3 times.
It seems I can bring it in a store with the right equipment but for around 300 an hour labour. So bye bye to tons of photos and such. I'll make myself forget what was on it.

thank you for your replies :)
