Cool! Thanks a lot Teddz and Shen. I've read that Chinese is the most difficult language to learn but I'd like to.

What are the basic greetings and salutations in Chinese?

    Thanks

You are lucky, Shen speaks Cantonese (Hong Kong area) while I speak Mandarin (Mainland chinese).

The basic greetings are, in mandarin:

    你好!Ni hao! - Hello!
    再见!Zai Jian! - Good bye!

Cantonese have their own pinyin, but very rarely seen (compared to mandarin pinyin anyway). In fact, it is so uncommon that any cantonese user hardly use it. I havn't seen the official spellings to tell the truth. But here is my custom version, and it's much more common for people who speak cantonese to go by their own pinyin.

Incidentally, "pin yin" - 拼音 is pronounced "ping yum" in cantonese:

Note: If you pronounce these English-like symonyms like how I've spelt them you are basically saying it correctly, but even so you really do need to listen to how it's said by a Cantonese speaker otherwise you will never really get the pronounciation 100%. Cantonese is much more guttural than Mandarin - for beginners, far easier

你好! - Hello! - "Lei Hole"

再见! - Goodbye! - "Joy Geen"

So if you were asking to go to the bathroom it would be:
    "Hibendo Che So?"

I think it would be " Qing weng, che so zai na li " - " Excuse me, where is the toilet? "
