    http://www.kanjistep.com

    This is a good site for learning all the kana (hiragana and katakana) as well as 100 of the kanji and the proper stroke order for all of 'em. Also check out the links from this page, there's lots of cool little japanese site links.

    Yay! I was worried when I wanted to learn Japanese that it'd be hard to find a teacher but there you go!

    ~I am always saving the world. I choose what to eat and save the world. The cereal I choose could cause me to get up for more milk, then maybe I'll be a little later to where ever, then save the guy who's going to invent the "Splitchgork" and end war, or something by making him have to walk around me on the street.He'll be a little later that day. I just saved the world, or changed it. Just something to think about~

    they have a fairly good 'learning japanese' section, but because the 'teachers' arent there anymore, *cough*amatuers like me*cough* are helping out there ^_^;

    there's still lessons up there, if you want to check it out.

    If you want to learn Japanese to understand anime you only have three practical choices: private tuition, Japanese boy/girlfriend or go live in Japan for a couple of months.

    I can tell you that after studying Japanese for 4 days a week at school for six years, I'd be lucky to understand 1/4 of what the characters are saying in some very ordinary anime like Doraemon. It wasn't until I got private tuiton and met a few Japanese in Melbourne that my Jap improved drastically.

    The weekly classes that you suggested, in my opinion, are not viable options. It would be the same as doing gym for 2 days a week and not even eating afterwards - for those who do gym.

    Also another good way is to go to www.amazon.com and look through the Japanese books they have there.

    Excellent ones:

    1st Volume Kanji learner book - 500 Kanji taught in this one.

    (another book will be posted shortly)
