    Now for something completely different.

I remember the coming of Everquest and all its hype. I also remember making the vow that I would never, ever pay to play a game on a monthly basis. The general consensus in my group of friends was "We not only have to buy the game, but we have to pay to play it as well?!"

Curiousity would eventually break me down, however. One of the member of the Lone Wolf clan convinced me to get on Final Fantasy XI with him and his wife. This was me as Koyuki, again (see my blog two entries ago). FFXI was fun, but addicting. Traveling anywhere in the world took a good chunk of time, and there is very little you can do with just a few minutes of play time. It got to the point where I sat down and examined it - most of my free time belonged to FFXI, and it was really beginning to grate as a game on the whole - I was revisiting the exact same places, killing whatever the exact same way. It was a grand example of recycled play. When I began to fall behind most of those I knew in game, I shelved it, and would not return to this day.

Just before my Christmas break, TamaKameKami didn't have to do much selling to get me to try World of Warcraft. I read reviews and the site itself to get a grasp of it, and it certainly sounded like Blizzard had done their homework, taking pretty much every weak point in the exisitng MMORPGs and turning them into a strength.

If you've been considering trying a MMORPG, WoW IMO is it. The world is beautiful, the mechanics are enjoyable, and there is more to do than you can shake a stick at - even a very large Mo'grosh toothpick. The only weak point is the rare spikes in latency, and the terrible lag when a large number of players gather in one area (I find the trade hub of the Alliance, Ironforge unbearable at times).

If you have the strange or sudden urge to look me up in Azeroth, you can find me 95% of the time on Windrunner server, as either Baiko (Human Rogue) or Tamasaburo (Night Elf Druid), or on Dunemaul when that server is down, as Thugg (Orc Warrior). Yes, those first two are female, but I have made it a point to make it known that the player is male - the fact that both Baiko and Tamasaburo were kabuki actors (men who played females) is also an appropriate hint.

If anything got me past some of those late work days after I got home, it would be WoW. Yeah, I really need a girlfriend...volunteers? ^_^
