The Macross community is split on opinion of M7.
Some think it's great, others consider it one of the worst anime ever.

Best thing is to see it for yourself and make up your own mind.

I fit into the later group, it's an embarrassingly bad series, the only saving grace are some the good songs in there, but even those are totally overused.

M7 began as a 49 episode TV series, this was followed buy the 4 part "Dynamite 7" OVA and also a half hour movie "The Galaxy is calling me", which ran in a double bill along with Macross Plus the Movie in Japanese cinemas.

The designer of the original SDF Macross characters Haruhiko Mikimoto did the chara designs for M7 and also created the "M7 Trash" manga.

If anyone is interested in seeing the series I have the entire series (series, OVA and movie) fansubbed. I can easily burn 'em to CD's if anybody wants 'em.

Try- http://www.macross.co.uk/77077/default.asp for info, it's a pretty good site :)

The Plot of Macross Dynamite 7 was really bad, it was about saving space whales from poachers or something. Well it was a bit interesting for some reason. But at most parts I just had to laugh, like when the battle was going on and police were shooting at enemies and then suddenly the main character dude yells out "LISTEN TO MY SONG!!!" and then plays It's a New Frontier. Well, the music in the series is what I like the most about it, and I've listened to more of the songs than watched the anime...

This isn't poxy Robotech, there're no Invid.
The Invid are from Genesis Climber Mospeada, nothing to do with Macross.

In M7 the basic plot is that the colony ship Macross 7 is on it's journey to seek out colonisable planets when they are attacked by the mysterious Protodevlin. These aliens use strange beam weapons to steal their opponents life force. The weapons cause the Macross 7's pilots to fall into a deep coma.

The main character is Basara, member of a band called Fire Bomber. When ever the Protodevlin mount an attack he usually decides to head out in his VF-19 Fire Valkyrie and have a good old sing at them.
Somehow Basara's singing has an effect on the victims of the beam weapon causing the scientists on board the ship to research this "Sound Energy" power.

Dynamite 7 was silly but still a vast improvment on the TV series. The animation was far better for a start.

M7's best factor is the music, if you're into Jpop/rock it's got a great ST.
All of Fire Bomber's CD's released in Japan made the Japanese top 10 at the time.
